fo The Canadian Statesman. Bowmanville. Wednesday. February 9.1994 Goalie Hopes to Defend National Title > by Brad Kelly * £ Winning Ladies' Senior 'AA' provincial hockey championships lias become habit-forming for the Toronto Aeros. But it is not a habit they wish to kick. And for Bowmanville's Sarah Couch, who is the youngest player on the team, the decision to play with the team this year is not one she is kicking herself for making. The defending Canadian champions champions won the right to defend their title title at the National Championships in Winnipeg next month. They put together together four straight wins at the provincial provincial finals held in Oshawa this past weekend. For the Aeros, it was their sixth consecutive provincial crown. "They say it gets better every time," said Couch, who played last season with the Jr. C Bowmanville Eagles. The 18-year-old goaltendcr was instrumental in securing a berth at next month's Nationals for her team. Following Toronto's 5-2 win over the Scarborough Firefighters in Sunday afternoon's gold medal game, Couch was selected as the MVP for the team, r, The Aeros advanced to the finals after posting a narrow 3-2 victory over the Scarborough Sting in the semi-finals. In round robin play, they finished atop their division after after a 3-1 victory over Mississauga and a 4-0 shutout over the Toronto Junior Aeros. "We had to work for every win we got," said Couch. "Everyone really picked their game up a notch." In addition to the final game, Couch was the starting goaltendcr in the opening game of the tournament against Mississauga. Though success was enjoyed by Couch and her teammates, Bowmanville's Bowmanville's other participant in the tournament, Sommer West, didn't have as much luck. Her team, the Toronto Junior Aeros, finished the tournament in a disappointing fashion, with a loss and tie in round robin play. Their record failed to qualify them for the semi-finals. "I don't know what went wrong this weekend," said West, still searching for reasons for her team's performance. "I expected us to make the semis. semis. We could have done a lot better than we did." The Junior Aeros opened with a 1-1 tie with' Mississauga, followed by the 4-0 shutout to the Senior Aeros. Aeros. Because Mississauga had a better better goals for and against ratio, they advanced to Sunday's semi-finals. Though West was dismayed at not gaining a victory in two games of the tournament, she wasn't overly surprised at the strong showing by the Senior Aeros. jiD •AS "I'm not surprised at all, and in a way, I'm glad. I know a lot of the players and it's nice to sec them win because it's the last year for a lot of them," she said. As defending National Champions, Champions, the Aeros will once again be favoured favoured to win the top prize in women's women's hockey in Canada. Four of the players on the team have been selected selected to represent Canada at the 1994 World Championships set for Lake Placid, NY, in April. Canada has won both the 1990 and 1992 World Women's Hockey Championship titles. That streak bodes well for Canada Canada when female hockey becomes an Olympic medal sport starting in 1998 at the Winter Games in Nagano, Nagano, Japan. Sarah Couch has visions of being included on the team representing Canada in the next Olympics. But before any of that transpires, there is another Canadian tide at stake next month. "We'll do just fine. Most of the girls have been there before, so we do have experience in our favour." Ontario will be the only province sending a representative team to the National Championships in Winnipeg. Winnipeg. The remaining provinces have elected to send an all-star team comprised comprised of players from all teams in their respective leagues. Couch expects Quebec will provide provide the biggest threat to her team's quest for another championship. o\x/s& Successful Week-end for Figure Skaters at Uxbridge Meet mmmmm Mmwmmm. i ' mm}, • 1 Kv-j Ü Hr HI # * -, * H. :■ : I : ■ v '-A The above members of the Bowmanville Figure Skating Club competed at the Uxbridge Invitational meet that was held January 28 to 30.
