Today, with the advent of micro- wave meals and drive-thru windows, the final meal of the day is usually rushed because of Jimmy's hockey game and Sally's ballet class. But, docs the cocktail hour still deserve a place in our very hectic modem lives? That is what John's family is trying to discover among other things in "The Cocktail Hour", the Bowmanville Bowmanville Drama Workshop's latest production. But what about the cocktail hour? Docs it really belong to the past? In our house we have our own version of the "cocktail hour." Usually, over milk and cookies or upon occasion en route to McDonald's, we discuss the happenings of the day and our concerns concerns for tomorrow. While most parents parents feel their children arc rejecting them when they give up the old traditions, traditions, it usually is not the case. With our lives in high gear most of'the time, something has to give. But the cocktail hour? It was a time for families, families, perhaps in the hurried pace of these modem times, it is something to hold onto and cherish for the future. future. Why would John object to it? In any event "The Cocktail Hour" is an enjoyable adult comedy that mixes the serious with the humorous. With a cast of actors who make even the most major conflict a joy to watch, everyone is bound to leave the theatre not only with a smile on their face, but with a few reflections on their own lives. "The Cocktail Hour" can be seen March 3, 4 and 5 at 8 p.m. at the BHS Theater. For tickets call 623- 4790 or 623-2059 adults $7 and students students $5. by J. M. To Bradley, his family and life are not to be put up to public inspection and criticism. He is from an era when discretion was not only the better part of valour but the better part of a respectable life. In their seventies, John's parents still honour the sanctity of the cocktail hour. Pat Marjerrison (Nana) Of course now, that they're alone, they have it in the kitchen while Anne, played by Elizabeth Prowcr, prepares the evening meal. Arm is also typical of her time, when women had a husband, children and a home to fill their every waking hour. Her daughter Nina, played by Pat Marjerrison, Marjerrison, is also a dedicated homemaker. Nina has a special dream of what she would like to do with her life. Instead she has become involved in many and varied charity works, as any "good wife and mother" of that era felt she should. John is the "trouble-maker" of the, family, always "stirring things up". But as well as creating conflict, John also creates change by forcing everyone everyone to rc-cvaluatc their lives. He feels that the cocktail hour is a thing of the past. Certainly for all of us there arc always things that need to change with the times. Segregation and the Cold War certainly existed in the past and most people arc glad tiicy arc gone. ********************************** * * * *'"|R0N WILL' Is Rousing Family W Medved NEW YORK POST W * . , ^ :Wl * Inspired by « M.
