The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Wednesday, February 9,1994 7 Phone Brad Kelly at 623-3303 ONE MORE REASON TO ATTEND -- There are a number of reasons to attend the Jr. C Reunion Game between the 1968 Bowmanville Whiz Kids and Ajax on Saturday, February 19. Over the weekend, we learned of a couple of more reasons to take in the game. As part of a draw for the game, an autographed sweater from Mats Sundin of the Quebec Nordiques will be available to be won. Also, some very attractive sweaters from the Russian team that participated in the 1992 World Championships will be included in the draw. The sweaters would be the envy of any sports memorabilia collector. BRHL DRAW WINNERS -- Three lucky winners received some unexpected good news on Saturday night as the Bowmanville Recreation Hockey League's Ontario Hydro Employees' Union Atoms concluded their draw. Ron Stainton won a pair of Toronto Maple Leaf tickets for their game on February 15 against Detroit. Second prize in the draw was a pair of tickets to a home game, donated by the Oshawa Generals. These were won by Mickey Bonnell. Third prize, a Leaf sweatshirt donated by Bowmanville Sports Shop, was won by Jason Buckley. Members of the Atom hockey team sold the tickets to help defray tournament costs. •••••••••■■• JUVENILES INCH CLOSER -- The Bowmanville Toro Juveniles are one step closer to advancing into the All-Ontario semi-final round. Should Bobcaygeon win, game five is Thursday night at the Recreation Complex at 7:30 p.m. If Bowmanville does win the series, they plan on playing an inter-squad Red and White game on Sunday night at 7:30 p.m., with free admission for kids, and a cost of only $1 for adults. STREAK EXTENDED -- It was mentioned here last week that Jim Vcltman's Buffalo Bandits lacrosse team was about to receive its stiffest test of the year on Saturday night against Philadelphia, and that the team's 21 game winning streak may be in danger. Well, it wasn't. Buffalo won the game, 15-11, and still has the longest current winning streak in pro sports. They are now only 11 shy of the all-time record of 33 set by the Los Angeles Lakers in 1972. Veltman; a teacher at Durham Christian High School, is one of the members of the Buffalo Bandits. ••■■eeeeeeee SCUBA DIVING EXPERIENCE - Big Brothers are holding a fund-raiser on Saturday, February 26 at 5:00 p.m. at the Fitness Centre, that will include instruction in Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus. The Toros added a power play marker in the third period when Mike Nesbitt finished off a classic passing play with Warren Bate and Doug Parkin. Parkin. The Toros advanced to a scries against Pickering, defeating them 7-5 to take the first game of the series. Bowmanville came out flat and found themselves trailing 3-0 before the game was 10 minutes old. Charlie Hargest put the Toros on the gamcshcct, with Brad Ormiston and Mike Nesbitt earning assists. Less than a minute later, Chris Heffcmcn's shot from the point eluded the Pickering Pickering goalie to make the score 3-2 after the first period. Warren Bate and Jason Jason Jeffreys drew the assists. The Toros started the second period period quickly and scored the equalizer when Allen Lacey deflected a Heffcr- nan shot into the net. Warren Bate also added an assist. Bate then shot Bowmanville ahead, taking a pass from Scott Millar and breaking in alone to score. Mike Talotti added to the margin, finishing off a play with Jason Jeffreys and Jason Hoffmann. Allen Lacey netted his second of the game from Jamie Shctlcr and Hoffmann to put the Toros up 6-3. And that victory could come as early as tonight Backed by a three-goal performance performance from Gary Armstrong on Sunday night, Bowmanville scored their third victory of the series by a 5-3 count. They now lead this best-of-seven quarter-final series three games to zero. The fourth game -- and quite likely the last -- will be played in Bobcaygeon tonight. If necessary, game five will be played back in Bowmanville on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. Quite likely, tomorrow night's ice time will be consumed by a practice. practice. Bobcaygeon has little chance of extending the scries to a fifth game. Bowmanville moved their level of play down a notch -- actually several notches -- during game three of the series on Sunday night at the Recreation Complex. But their talent-laden lineup was still good enough to win rather handily. After winning the first two games in convincing fashion by scores of 16-2 and 10-0, Bowmanville Bowmanville played just well enough to win game three. Undisciplined penalties, and a lethargic lethargic on-ice performance kept the score close for the first time in the series. "It's tough to play in a series like this," said coach Mark Watson. "A lot of guys were floating around out there tonight, and weren't weren't putting out an effort. We can't have an effort like that against a good team or we'll be out in a hurry" hurry" . In addition to Armstrong's hat-: trick, Brad Robinson and Jeff Murphy Murphy added goals for Bowmanville. Jason Condon replied with a pair for Bobcaygeon, while Derek Glendining Glendining had the other. The teams were tied at 1-1 after the opening period, but Bowmanville Bowmanville took control of the game in the second period, opening up a 4-2 lead. The game was entertaining enough in the latter stages to keep the surprisingly decent-sized crowd to the very end. With Bowmanville leading 4-2, Dave Real received a minor penalty, as well as a major for fighting, with only 7:47 left in the game. This gave Bobcaygeon a seven-minute power play. Even short-handed, Bowmanville was the better of the two teams. Bobcaygeon were unable to muster muster any type of offensive threat. And when they did manage a shot on goaltender Drew Campbell, it came from well out. The only good scoring opportunity opportunity through the entire seven-minute span was generated by Bowman ville. Murphy converted a beautiful two-on-one break with Todd Cannings Cannings with only 1:21 to go in the game. The short-handed goal gave Bowmanville a 5-2 lead. Glendining replied for Bobcaygeon Bobcaygeon with only 35 seconds left to close the margin to within two goals. Confident of victory in the series, Bowmanville announced that they will accept the bye in the semifinals semifinals afforded to them after finishing finishing first overall during the regular season. In the other quarter-final series, Little Britain has opened up a three- games-to-zero lead on Uxbridge, while Port Perry has needed overtime overtime to win each of the first two games of their series with Lakefield. THE SCOOP -- Not dressed for Bowmanville on Sunday were Jere- mie Pate (shoulder), Sean Brown (collarbone), Gary Adams (ribs), Eric Warner (school)...Jason Bailey started Sunday's game in'goal, but was replaced by Drew Campbell to start the second period. Bailey was suffering from the flu.Jn the 10-0 win in game two on Friday night, Brad Robinson and Gary Armstrong had two goals each. Singles went to Drew Allenby, Dave Stockton, Curtis Curtis Hodgins, Todd Cannings, Craig Hilton and Eric Warner.
