The Independent, Canadian Statesman Weekender, Bowmanville, Saturday, February 12,1994 15 by Dr. Kathlynn Hoch, D.C. In this day and age, we are constantly constantly aware of our image of health and beauty. Our skin can be our first indicator of our state of health. It is increasingly important to ensure we get proper rest and nutrition, fresh air and exercise, proper elimination and protection from the prolonged exposure exposure of the harsh elements of sun, intense intense cold and wind.. Skin renews itself every 28 days by pushing the new cells from the deeper layers of the skin. As the new cells make their journey towards the outer layers, the cells begin to slowly dehydrate, flatten and eventually die, only to be sloughed off as they reach the outer surface. This process can be from bad nutritional habits and environmental environmental toxins. How can we possibly possibly rid ourselves of this constant battle? battle? Ensuring proper elimination through the skin, lungs, urination and bowels is a good first step. Consum ing through diet or supplements, the "skin" (antioxidant) vitamins that shield our body from toxins, and the ravages of pollution and its reactions. These vitamins retard biological aging. aging. The main "skin" vitamins are vitamin vitamin C, E, beta carotene, selenium and zinc. Another aid to the skin is to stimulate and speed up the renewal process by sloughing off the dead skin cells with regular deep cleansing facials, lofas, or dry brushing for the body. This will rapidly help restore and revitalize the skin. Deep cleansing facials can benefit all skin types by decongesting dilated blocked pores, rehydrating and moisturizing moisturizing dry and dehydrated skins, stimulating collagen and elastin production production for mature skin and restoring balance to the oily or acne skins. For problem skin, weekly treatments until the problem is normalized is suggested. suggested. However, skin that requires occasional occasional assistance and a deeper cleansing cleansing will benefit by having a facial once every four to six weeks. Handling It by Lloyd Scott . V Apologies are becoming mechanical mechanical and meaningless. , "Sorry about that," the usual threadbare formula, contains no more genuine apology than "No problem!" contains sincere reassurance that all's well. The thoughtful, sincere apology may soon be a relic. "I'm sorry but the number you've dialed is not in service." 'I'm sorry," says another recorded voice, "but I'm not able to take your call at the moment." The technological ease with which we can apologize on tape to unknown persons for something we do every day has helped to empty apologies of any meaning. Other apologies have a different twist. "I apologize for phoning you at home" (or at 11 p.m.) usually means: "I know you don't want calls at home but I'm ignoring that. I'm apologizing apologizing because it's expected and because apologizing gives me permission to go ahead and interrupt you anyway." So-called apologies are easy ways of getting off the hook. Just say the word "Sorry" and forget the whole thing. Some parents, often quite reasonably, reasonably, require their children to apologize apologize for behavior the parents consider inappropriate. Their hope is that the kids will thereby acquire the good judgement to apologize when they know they're in the wrong. Happily, some do acquire that judgement. Others, Others, however, may acquire nothing more than the habit of saying the word, "Sorry." "I said I'm sorry. What more do you want?" "What can I do after I've said I'm sorry?" Someone who insists on a sincere, complete apology may be accused of laying on a guilt trip. Sometimes, offering offering an apology may open the door to abuse. For example, "It's about time you apologized. Do you have any idea how much trouble you've caused me, you so-and-so?" Apologies didn't melt this person's heart, inviting for- 1 giveness. Maybe if apologies were offered in the hope of receiving forgiveness, they'd take on more meaning. To gain forgiveness, however, onè might have to go beyond. apology and promise never to do it again. Using . apologies only when sincerely felt might raise their, value. Some people apologize for virtually virtually everything, perhaps out of a lack of self-respect. "I have nothing specific to apologize apologize for. I'm just sorry for everything in general." • . , r "I'm sorry for apologizing." Walking along a city street, I noticed noticed a man walking toward me stub his foot on. a raised part of the sidewalk. sidewalk. As we passed one another sev-, eral feet apart, he glanced at me and muttered, "Sorry." Some people never apologize for anything. Others are confused about which things they should and should not apologize for. Apologies have fallen into abuse and misuse. So much so, that the more one tries to offer a sincere apology, apology, the more phony it may sound. Like "Thanks," 'Take care," "No problem," "Sorry" is another ritualized ritualized expression. They remain, however, however, signs of civility from person to person. Perhaps we should be grateful grateful for the display of courtesy and politeness politeness in such automatic responses as, "Sorry."
