Eleven full-time and eight temporary temporary employees received layoff notices last Thursday, February 3rd. President of CUPE local 1785 Morrie Patchen isn't optimistic the workers will all be called back. "I doubt that you'll see all of them back," he said. "But we're hoping to see all of the full-time workers back." Peter Watson, the Waste Reduction Reduction Manager for Durham, said the layoffs occurred after it was determined determined that no other employment opportunities opportunities were available within the department. "There has been a 25% reduction in weight of materials received at the Whitby Recycling Centre," Mr. Watson said. The amount of recyclables coming coming into the processing centre from residential Blue Boxes and community community igloos has declined. The Waste Reduction Manager figures the cold weather may have been to blame. Morrie Patchen, of CUPE, speculates speculates that some home-owners may have been put off over Blue Box collection schedule changes over the Christmas holidays. "The public itself is not putting out their recyclables." He's appealing to residents not to put their newspapers or recyclable cardboard into the regular waste stream or send it up the chimney. "Please don't bum your papers. Make sure they get out in the Blue Box," he said. A pilot project at the Recycling Centre has meant that metal cans and plastic pop bottles are now going going to be shipped co-mingled to a Hamilton facility where they will be sorted. The new processing arrangement, in combination with severely cold weather, is being blamed for the layoffs. layoffs. Are the walls closing In on you? Does your house need repair?
