The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Wednesday, February 16,1994 9 B.H.S. and Courtice Prepare for Girls' Volleyball Championships by Brad Kelly Impressive is the word that immediately comes to mind when coaches Lorraine Knowles and Doreen Ross discuss their senior girls' volleyball teams. For Knowles, who is in her second season as the senior coach at Courtice Secondary School, her team is poised to advance advance to the LOSSA 'AA' playoffs February 23 at Exeter High School. And for Ross, who guides the senior team at Bowman ville High School, her team has set its sights on winning DYSSAA. The two teams clashed on Friday afternoon in Courtice, with the home side winning the match 2-1. Bowmanville opened with a convincing convincing 15-1 win in the first game, but Courtice fought back to take the match, winning the final two games ■ by scores of 15-4 and 15-11. In the third and deciding game, they trailed 11-8, but rallied to win the tie-breaker. "We are generally a slow- starting team," said Knowles. "We have the ability to come back, and today we showed it." For Knowles, who has previous coaching experience in Courtice with the junior program, uncertainty surrounded the senior team at the beginning of the, season. Only three players from last year's team returned, and two of the players who made the team had not played at the varsity level before. But, backed by leaders Nicky Town League Leafs Defeat James Ins. In Exciting 4-1 Win The Thursday Night Town League Leafs continued with their strong work ethic and were rewarded rewarded with a win over James Insurance on Saturday, February 12. On the first shift, James Insurance Insurance came out flying and scored 1:35 into the game with a goal by Trevor Cowan. Midway through the first, Darren Kelly evened the game at one apiece. In the second period, Darren scored again, with the assist going to Justin Ross. Late in the second, Matthew Withers scored, assisted by Derrick Watt and Chris Beneteau. At the 11:25 marie of the third period, period, Jody Halik fed a beautiful pass from the comer, which Darren Kelly deposited into the net to make it 4-1. Late in the third, Darren Kelly scored two more times to complete a natural hat-trick in a five-goal game for him. Congratulations to the entire Leaf team on a hard-played game. Watt and Jaime Turkocio, the team has exceeded the accomplishments of last year's club. "This is the nicest team of girls that I have ever coached in my 13 years of teaching," praised Knowles. In addition to their competitive record in league play, the team placed second at a tournament at Monsignor John Peryma School in January. Now, as the playoffs approach, Knowles is confident that her team will establish itself as a contender. Possibly advancing out of their pool to the semi-finals. "If we can play like we did in the Pereyma tournament, we are quite capable of achieving our goal." It's the maturity level of her team that coach Ross likes as they too look ahead to the LOSSA playoffs. Led by Gena Jaspers-Fayer and Tanya McLean, Bowmanville has done well, despite having no returning returning players on the team. "I am actually impressed with this team," said Ross. "With us not being a veteran team and to play .500 is great." Ross is anticipating being in a pool with Eastdale and Donevan when the LOSSA 'AAA' playoffs begin. The key element needed for the team to advance is getting off to a quick start in their opening game. "We have to take the first game because we aren't over aggressive when we get behind by a lot." In their only tournament appearance appearance this year at O'Neill, the team failed to register a victory. But, despite despite being eliminated, the experience experience taught the team a valuable lesson, lesson, said Ross. "It showed us that if we want to win, we have to be aggressive, and we are playing that way now." Playoffs for Bowmanville could start as early as this week.
