The Independent, Canadian Statesman Weekender, Bowmanville, Saturday, February 19,1994 13 M&M Meats Has a Nose for Value by Dr. Kathlynn Hoch, D.C. BEAT THE "WINTER BLUES" Many Canadians, starting in October, October, November, suffer from the winter winter "blues", also known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Possible symptoms may include the following: low energy, fatigue, depression, lethargy, anxiety, food cravings,. weight gain, irritability. These symptoms disappear in spring, upon adequate exposure to sunlight. For those people who need help now, the following are some helpful tools and treatments to beat the "Winter Blues". Bring sunlight indoors using a full spectrum light bulb. Try and sit basking basking in full spectrum light one to two hours per day. I put it in my reading lamp at home. Diet is also very important. Increase Increase complex carbohydrate foods, breads and grains, fresh vegetables and fruit. Decrease foods high in fat and calories. Hamburgers and French fries lead to sluggishness, fatigue and weight gain. Exercise regularly 15 to 20 minutes minutes per day; some people exercise in front of their full spectrum light. They report that almost immediately depression lifts and they have more energy. Try and spend some time outdoors outdoors between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. to obtain the health benefits of sunlight. During the winter months, supplementation supplementation with a good natural source multi-vitamin and mineral complex is often helpful. Homeopathic remedies help alleviate many symptoms of depression depression and fatigue. I use a combination combination of the above as well as laser acupuncture acupuncture to stimulate "Beta Endorphen" release which helps influence influence the body's overall feeling of well-being. f Children often suffer from this disorder as well. Many teachers and parents mention that the kids seem cranky with short attention spans, headaches and cravings for junk food. All of the above would apply for children as well. I see many children children who, after a few alterations in diet, increased exercise and the use of full spectrum light, experience great benefits. - The information in this column is of a general nature. Kidney Foundation Holds Fundraisers During March March is Kidney Month in Canada. Canada. It is also the time of year that The Kidney Foundation holds its annual door-to-door fund-raising campaign, the March Drive. This year in Durham Durham Region, area residents will be volunteering their services by canvassing canvassing their neighbourhoods to help raise money for the Foundation. "The March Drive is our most im- It by Lloyd Scott J Some of us take things personally. We're thin-skinned. Each of us responds"differently to sarcastic and snide remarks, for example, example, or to teasing or criticism. Some of us just slough it off, relatively relatively undisturbed by such stuff; Others are very upset by it, but not wanting to let on, practice a studied calm. A few others can't or choose not to disguise disguise their hurt or irritation. Jokes made at someone's expense may either affront or amuse that person. person. The snide and the sarcastic have to be measured on a personal scale, from light to heavy, from easy to hard-to-take. Somewhere along that imaginary scale is a point that marks the limit for each of us. At that point, for reasons that aren't always clear, our smile fades and we're no longer enjoying what's being said to us. Most people recognize recognize and respect those limits in one another, avoiding those tender spots. Practical jokers and inveterate teasers, teasers, however, press the sore point, laying on the sarcasm and kidding. On the other hand, innocent ribbing, and roasting of each other is good fun for lots of folks. I'm omitting from this minidiscussion minidiscussion direct insults and abusive language to which we're all sensitive to some degree. Some people can't figure out (at least not on the spot) when sarcasm and teasing arc malicious and meant to hurt more than amuse, or when they're innocent fun, meant more to amuse than hurt. They didn't leam the difference in childhood, so they're unsure how to react. Their uncertainty uncertainty can lead to paranoid suspicions suspicions that, in turn, misinterpret an innocent innocent wisecrack, twisting it in their minds into a personal attack. The wisecrack got to them and it hurt. I enjoy clever, well-timed sarcastic sarcastic zingers, especially if they're sharp. I sometimes envy the gift for quick thinking of those who can, un- maliciously, skewer the unwary. The following adapted from the writings of Ashley Brilliant, arc polished zingers, zingers, the sort that might enliven political political debate in our legislative halls, replacing replacing the direct insult for which an apology must be demanded. "If you don't like my opinion of you, you can always improve." "Nothing is as good as it used to be, especially your memory." "It's human to make mistakes and ■some of us, like you, arc more human than others." "Frankly, you deserve to be left alone in your struggle to have your own way." "By accepting you as you are, I'm , not necessarily abandoning all hope of your improving." Thin-skinned people who "take things personally," frequently find themselves in the dreary state of angry angry sulk. Just as brooding inflates their hurt feelings, sulking deepens their suspicions, making them even more thin-skinned in anticipation of the next perceived put-down. The sulk is an easy mood to slip into but hard to get out of. Sulkers respond to feeling rejected by rejecting in turn, something that can perhaps be excused in children. Adults, however, who are aware of this tendency in themselves, may find it useful to monitor it to see exactly how it operates in their lives. Taking things too personally, then blaming hurt feelings on others, gets us conveniently off the hook. It's like insisting that others treat us with kid gloves, by wearing a sign that reads "Fragile, Handle With Care - Or Else." Retaliation will follow sooner or later. There's always some risk of getting getting hurt in these ways in every relationship. relationship. But by and large, thin skin is the responsibility of the thin- skinned. "With 1994 marking the 30th anniversary anniversary of the Foundation, we hope to raise $5 million nationally this year, making it our most successful campaign ever. Community support is essential in helping the Foundation achieve this goal. Every dollar counts," continued Dr. Snider. In 1.964, when The Kidney Foundation Foundation was established, a patient diagnosed diagnosed with kidney disease had little little chance of survival. The only option available to patients .was to undergo dialysis treatments - but dialysis dialysis was new, had not been perfected perfected and was a long and painful procedure. procedure. Without major advances in research, the outlook for kidney patients patients was bleak. Since that time, breakthroughs in the treatment of kidney disease have been remarkable. The possibility that transplantation would become a .viable .viable form of treatment for kidney failure seemed far-fetched 30 years ago. But today, thanks to research advances, advances, it is the treatment of choice for many kidney patients. For patients patients not suitable for transplantation, dialysis treatments have been reduced reduced from up to 36 hours a week, to 12 hours, and new medications and technological advances continue to improve the treatment. The Kidney Foundation depends on donations from the community to continue to fund vital research projects projects and to provide services to support support kidney patients and their families families across Canada.
