18 The Independent, Canadian Statesman Weekender, Bowmanville, Saturday, February 19,1994 OFA Delivers Message to Premier Rural Ontario çan not live up to its economic potential until the government government of Ontario makes a long term commitment to revitalize rural communities. , This was the fundamental message message delivered today to Premier Rae and his cabinet by the Ontario Federation Federation of Agriculture (OFA) during its annual brief. "There are tremendous opportunities in the Ontario agrifood sector for economic growth and renewal," renewal," OFA President Roger George told the Premier. "But these opportunities will never see the light of day unless your government can abolish useless regulations and create a rural infrastructure where a vibrant agrifood sector can thrive. This is fundamental to Ontario farmers' ability ability to withstand changes that will come with the implementation of international international trade agreements." The OFA wants to see action on successive government's long promised promised rural economic development. Mr. George urged the Premier and his cabinet to encourage farmers to add value to their products, citing the fledgling ethanol industry as an example example of an initiative that has the potential potential to positively impact on rural economies. Mr. George stressed the need for a provincial marketing campaign to promote Ontario product in partnership partnership with the agrifood sector. "Ontario "Ontario farmers are in the mood to compete, compete, not retreat," he said. "We need this government to cut through the' regulatory quagmire which strangles dreams and cuts off investment. Lack of inter-ministerial communication, combined with current government policy which undermines farmers' confidence, only serves to stop the creation of new wealth and costs Ontario Ontario jobs," he said. The OFA brief outlined 34 recommendations recommendations ranging from the removal of all education taxes from farm land and buildings; shelving plans to increase increase the minimum wage; implementing implementing a rebate program for agricultural agricultural labour costs; and establishing a grant/loan program to assist farmers making improvements to benefit the environment. Mr. George also stressed the need for all ministries to involve farm representatives representatives on any policy planning that will impact on Ontario's farm community. "Agriculture is a diverse industry and farmers are the caretakers caretakers of over 14 million acres of Ontario Ontario land. As cabinet ministers you must realize that agriculture is not an island surrounded only by the jurisdiction jurisdiction of the Ontario Ministry. of Agriculture and Food. Many policies proposed by other ministries have a direct affect on how we operate," Mr. George said. "Ontario's farm community community is tired of legislative harassment harassment from ministries that have no idea how Ontario farm families run their business." LAWYER Peter E. Heslin, LL.B.
