Veltman's Buffalo Bandits of the Major Indoor Lacrosse League, lost their first game since January 25 of 1992, dropping a 14-10 decision to the Boston Blazers. The loss, in front of a capacity crowd at the Buffalo Auditorium, brought to an end the team's 22-game winning a phys-ed teacher at Durham Christian High School. "The streak was always in the back of our minds, but nobody wanted to talk about keeping it alive. Now that it's over, it's kind of a relief. Now we can settle down and get back to playing lacrosse," said Veltman, Buffalo put together a 22 game streak that enabled them to win back-to-back league championships. This season, their winning ways continued. They posted victories in the first four games of the regular season. The streak was even threatening to become the longest in the history of pro sports. The current mark of 33 was set by the Los Angeles Lakers in 1972. "The players said afterwards that we were too relaxed in warmup, and weren't focused for the challenge that every team gives us," said Veltman. In two games last season against Boston, the Bandits managed two victories. But both wins were by a margin of one In Saturday's game, Veltman fired a goal and added three assists, which moved him into fifth spot in the league scoring "They needed a little more offence out of me, so I hope I'm satisfying them," said Veltman. In five games, he has seven goals and 14 assists. Late Goal Gives Carnation a Win On Saturday, February 19, the Carnation Flower Power Atoms played against Geranium Homes in an exciting match-up. In the first period, the flower power scored first, with centre A1 Rahme netting a goal with a high rocket, assisted by Bryan Villemerc. Flower power centre J.J. Worden scored his team's second goal, with the assist coming from Phil Hopkins. Hopkins. Geranium replied with a goal by right winger John Spicer, assisted assisted by Ryan Hill and Adam Smith. In the second period, Geranium's Jeff Hrdlicka scored, unassisted, to tic the game. Jeff Hrdlicka gave his team the lead with his second goal of the game, assisted by Trevor Ly- cett. The flower power team rallied at the end of the period, with right winger Phil Hopkins stuffing in a goal, assisted by JJ. Worden and Ottorino Akcsol to lie the game. Both goaltcndcrs played sharp for their team, but flower power's Mike Shrives shone a little brighter in the third period, shutting out all of Geranium's shooters. JJ. The defending Central Ontario 1 league champions are still in limbo as they await word of their opponent for the next round. v'A After disposing of Bobcaygcon in four easy games, Bowmanvillc elected to bypass the semi-final , round, forcing Port Perry and Little Britain to face one another. That series stands two games to one in favour of Port Perry. Game four is tonight, while game five of the series is Thursday. Both games are in Port Perry and, should the MoJacks prevaU in both, the league final could begin as early as next Tuesday night '/■ "That is going to be a good, tough series. Both teams are evenly matched," said Bowmanvillc coach Mark Watson, who attended game one of the series. If Little Britain should win a game and prolong the series, the extra extra time off won't be a factor for Bowmanvillc said Watson, who supported supported the decision to take the bye. "I think we would have been dumb for not taking it," said Watson. Watson. "If we had picked another team, they would have been pumped, figuring that we felt we could beat them easily."
