The Independent, Canadian Statesman Weekender, Bowmanville, Saturday, February 26,1994 9 Optimist Tyke Selects Collect One Win in Past Three Games The Bowmanville Optimist Club Tyke Selects played three very strong teams over the past two weekends, winning once and coming coming up just a bit short in the other two games. The boys faced off against the Ajax Selects on Saturday, February 12, in Newcastle. Showing the effects effects of a two-week layoff, Bowmanville Bowmanville were unable to get on track in this game offensively. However, their usual defensive prowess kept the game scoreless for the first peri- od-and-a-half. Ajax applied the pressure as the second period moved along and took a 2-0 lead, in spite of some excellent excellent saves by Gord Baird. A fine rush by Rene Cartier set up a goal by Michael Richardson to narrow the score to 2-1 at the end of two periods. periods. Richardson then drew a hooking penalty early in the third, and Ajax capitalized on the power play for their third and final goal. The goal came on a rebound off of a point- blank save by Baird, who continued to play well to keep the game close. Bowmanville were unable to generate much offence, and fell to Ajax by a 3-1 count. Missing from the BRHL lineup on this day were Chris Boyce and Matt Mitchell, who had played three" games earlier in the day with their house league team (Dufferin Aggregates) Aggregates) at a tournament in Peterborough, Peterborough, and were ineligible to play a fourth game on the same day for insurance insurance reasons. Congratulations to Chris and Matt for their team's victory victory in that tournament. On Saturday, February 20, in Newcastle, the BRHL Tyke Selects played a rematch with the Malvern Selects. The first period was one of the best opening periods for our boys in some time. They came out hustling and skating hard. They were rewarded rewarded early when Bryan Barchard scored, assisted by Dan Michael, who had made a fine rush up the middle to create the chance. Bowmanville Bowmanville continued to press, but Malvern scored late in the period and was fortunate to come out of the period tied. The late goal seemed to deflate the boys a little, and Malvern took advantage of this let-down to score two second period goals. Malvern added a fourth goal early in the third period before Bowmanville regained regained their composure and intensity. intensity. Michael Richardson started Bowmanville Bowmanville on the comeback trail with a hard, well-aimed shot, assisted by Rene Cartier. Some good forechecking forechecking by Matt Mitchell and strong slating by Bryan Barchard kept Malvern hemmed in their own end long enough for Barchard to hit Adam Cull with a nice centering pass, which Cull one-timed into the net for Bowmanville's third goal. The boys were unable, however, to complete the comeback, and lost to a very disciplined Malvern club 4-3. Justin Andrews and Gord Baird were very steady in goal, facing 21 shots, many of them of the difficult variety. Before the Màlvem game, coach Jim Barchard announced that the team would be without the services of defenceman Jamie Whitehead for the rest of the season. Jamie had suffered suffered a broken leg while public skating skating with his family. The team will certainly miss Jamie's steady play on the blueline and wish him a speedy recovery. A card signed by all of the boys was to be presented to Jamie, and we look forward to seeing him at future Select games when he is up and about. Good luck, Jamie. The BRHL Optimist Tyke Selects Selects travelled all the way to Brampton Brampton for a game on Sunday, February 20. This was an entertaining game to watch, although many parents on both sides seemed to feel that the referees referees ignored too many flagrant fouls. Although Bowmanville outshot Brampton 19-8, coach Jim Barchard didn't feel that his team looked that dominant from the bench. They certainly certainly didn't dominate the first two shifts, which saw Brampton take an easy 2-0 lead. This wake-up call got the boys going. And, when Bryan Barchard scored on a weak backhander, backhander, the whole team started to skate with more desire. Bowmanville continued to buzz the Brampton net, creating many scoring chances. But, they got careless careless on a line change and gave up a goal with nine seconds left in the period period to trail 3-2. It was all Bowmanville in the third period, however, as they scored three unanswered goals to post a convincing 5-3 victory. Richardson Richardson scored the tieing and winning winning goals, assisted both times by Bryan Barchard, with Matt Best chipping in an assist on the equalizer. equalizer. Barchard scored the insurance goal, unassisted, on an excellent wrist shot to the top right shelf. Stephen Comelissen was hurt midway through the period on a take down in front of the net, but he shook it off and came back with much determination. The defence corps of Rene Cartier, Cartier, Matt Mitchell, Andrew Fracz and Corey Oliver controlled the boards well and moved the puck up-ice quickly. Mitchell was filling in for the injured Jamie Whitehead and did not look out of place on the blue- line.
