The Independent, Canadian Statesman Weekender, Bowmanville, Saturday, February 26 r 1994 5 Name tags and sign-in procedures were used to keep a tally on individuals who volunteered to bowl in this year's Big Brothers Bowl For Millions at the Liberty Bowl in Bowmanville. A Big Brothers volunteer volunteer wrote names on tags as people signed in on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 19, for the first part of the Celebrity Day bowling. . Ontario Gov't Not Involved In Rent Hike by Gord Mills, MPP Durham East Some of the local papers have published articles about the recent de- cisioii of the Ontario Rent Review Hearings Board with respect to rent increases for some residents of Wil- mot Creek. One article described this appalling decision as "a government- approved rent hike." I believe that responsible journalism journalism should not mislead people into thinking that the current government of the province in any way approved this decision or even of the process of legislation which lead to the decision. Because nothing could be further from the truth. First it is important to note that it was the landlord. Pine Ridge Park, Inc. which decided to increase the rents and notified the effected residents residents of these increases in 1989 and 1990. All the landlord had to do under under the provincial legislation that was in effect at that time, The Residential Rent Regulations Act, was to justify the increases through a process that was very much weighted against the interests of tenants who wished to keep rent increases low. The opposition New Democrats before the 1990 election campaigned against the governments system of "rent regulation" as unfair and promised promised that it would do all it could to change that system. After the NDP came to office in Ontario in 1990, one of the first things it accomplished in the first year was to make good on that pledge. The Rent Control Act (Bill 4) replaced the very unfair previous previous legislation, effective October 1st, 1990. Without the change, the residents of Wilmot Creek and many other renters throughout Ontario would be facing similar high rent increases increases for the years since 1990, with similar unconscionable delays in the process of approval and appeal of those increases. For your information I am sending a copy of a letter to residents of Wilmot Wilmot Creek which I wrote when I learned of the decision of the Board. You will note that this Board, established established under the legislation of the previous government, will be ceasing ceasing operation after it disposes of the last few cases of the huge backlog of appeals which were brought about under the old Residential Rent Regulation Regulation Act. I hope you will take the opportunity opportunity to set the record straight.
