( 12 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Wednesday, March 2,1994 A guide to fine dining and entertainment New Drama Workshop Production Opens Thursday It's almost time for The Cocktail Hour. It will not be here long and it is, without a doubt, one of the Bowmanville Bowmanville Drama Workshop's finest performances. The Cocktail Hour is the story of a middle-aged son who comes home to ask his father's permission to produce produce a play he has written about the family. Played by J. Randy Alldread, John is a typical middle child who still craves the attention of his parents. parents. Of course, having an older sister and younger brother who always seem to get more than a fair share of his parents' notice, does not help John. Like all families, John's has its secrets and the family is afraid John will "spill the beans". The play has many interesting aspects aspects to it, one of which is family re- . lationships. What is truly fascinat ing is how each of the children deals with this dream. Nina, played by Pat Marjerrison, and the unseen Jigger try to ignore their dreams because of the difficulties difficulties the fulfillment of the dreams would bring into their lives. John is the only one willing to face his parents' parents' disapproval in the pursuit of his dream. What is also engrossing is John's relationship with his father. His father, father, Bradley (John Amesbury), does not seem to give his elder son the attention attention or the love he craves. This leads John to some rather shocking assumptions. John tries to get his mother, Ann (Elizabeth Prower), to disclose the secret of what happened in his youth. Ann is a true product of her generation, generation, believing that any sort of public public attention is vulgar. Despite the upper middle class background of the characters, much of their life is easily related to by everyone, Directed by Jean Sheridan, The Cocktail Hour is a fast-moving and humorous lookjt_; family relationships. The set for the play is remarkable. The furniture, which has been loaned by Orchard Park, helps create the a.t-, mosphere for the family's life-style. The most important piece of furniture is the grand piano. Bradley is especially especially fond of the piano for his memories memories of how everyone used to gather around it singing. The piano, while looking real, is actually a prop created created by Norm James for the play Tribute. Tribute. It has been borrowed by theatre groups in both Port Perry and Oshawa. The work that is involved in producing producing this play has been placed in the capable hands of Sheila Majid.
