People new to the village could get acquainted! On Wednesday, February 23rd the executive of the Newcastle Horticultural Horticultural Society met at the home of President President Wylma Allin. Wylma accompanied accompanied by Hazel Crago and Shelley Etmanskie, president of the Orono Society, had attended a meeting in Port Perry at . the OMAF office the previous Wednesday. Rural Committee Committee Advisor Barbara Weese, Anne Bourke, and District Director Kathleen Kathleen Petrie chaired the meeting there - Duties of officers and District Annual Annual meeting plans for Pefferlaw April 16 were discussed. I V.y - ■ Xv-r. i Dr. Paul Hardy On February 1 Memorial Hospital, added another new face to its medical staff. Dr. Paul Hardy, pictured above, is originally a native of Toronto, but he prefers the atmosphere of the Bowmanville area and says he came to work at MHB "because of the excellent excellent staff'. Dr. Hardy is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (Canada). He trained at Western University in London, London, and interned at North York General General Hospital. After spending six months at MHB doing general practice practice locums (which translates to filling filling in for other doctors who may be absent or on leave), he went to Edmonton Edmonton for five years of specialty training in general surgery. Newcastle Lions News Twenty-eight Lions from the Newcastle Club welcomed 10 guests to their regular meeting on February 23. Eight guests were Lions from the Whitby Club, one was the guest speaker and another a prospective new member. Dinner was catered by the Newcastle Newcastle Lioness Club with meat-loaf and gravy the fare of the day, a dinner dinner enjoyed by all. President Tony Clements served as Chairman and after dinner asked Lion Dennis Walker to introduce the guest speaker, Bob Willsher, Northumberland Northumberland Clarington School Board Trustee. Bob gave a superb address on the school system and the Board of Tmstees. Some subjects covered were community input, the calibre of students, destreaming, the provincial writing review which showed that 1 most local students' are above average, average, Cultural Equity ünd'Anti' Ratisnf Policy, Family and'School Violence, 1 Durham Regional Police Adopt-A- School program, Co-op Education, Apprenticeship Program and Waste Management in our schools. Many questions were queued up for Bob which regrettably forced the Chairman Chairman to impose a time restriction. Bob was thanked by Lion Mike Swaga and presented with a gift of appreciation from the club. Lion Amos reported that he had bowled in place of President Tony at the Big Brothers Bowl a Thon. But quelled the fears of those who were sponsoring him by the point by announcing announcing that his score was only 147. Lion Roy Watts announced that the Lions will be selling chocolate Bunnies again this year and each Lion will have a case of twenty-four to sell. Lion Roy reminded the club that this is a good fund-raiser and the bunnies are not hard to sell at $3.25 each. Lion Sam Galea announced that the Annual Chicken Barbecue will be moved to June twenty-sixth this year.. The First Newcastle Beavers (Colony A) celebrated Lord Baden Powell's birthday on Tuesday Tuesday night, Feb. 22 at Parkview Manor in Newcastle Village. The boys and their leaders joined the residents in making bookmarks with the residents' and boys' names written on them, along with decorations. The Beavers also sang songs and played games with the seniors. This is the 20th year Beavers have been a part of the Scouting and Guiding movement.
