Paul Wasson and the Burnt River Band performed at Sunday's . Durham Region Country Music Showcase held at the of St. Joseph's ■ 'Church Hall in Bowmanville. The Burnt River Band is the house ./band for the monthly show featuring local country music talent. The showcase will be taking place at St. Joseph's from now until June. Watch for the next session on March 20. Winners Announced for Winter's Harvest Show The Visual Arts Centre is pleased to announce the award winners for the Tenth Annual Winter's Harvest. The Grand Prize, sponsored by ;Janct Coates, was awarded to Martin J. Markan' for Christmas Tree Field Kit. Markan also received the Ontario Ontario Crafts CounciVDesign Award. Awards of excellence were given to Kerry Fletcher and Susan Bclyca, to Robert K. E. Mitchell for creativity, creativity, to Barbara KimballTor best use of the medium. Awards of merit were given to Roz Pritchard, Ellen Good, and Judith Kendrick. Honorary mentions mentions were give to Jacques Cote, Jay McCarten, R.K.E. Mitchell. Later in the year, some of the award winners will be exhibited at the Ontario Crafts Council's Chalmers Building, IMcCaul Street, Toronto. In honour of our tenth anniversary the jury was composed of a panel of three previous jurors. They were Michael Michael Fortune, Judith Tinkl, and Paul Williams, Donors include Janet Coates, Tuckers Pottery, Ruth Sedge- wick, The Municipality of Claring- ton, Mayor's Office, White Rose, and The Flying Dutchman. Many areas of craft are represent-' ed in this exhibition, which runs from March 6-31 inclusive. The opening reception will be held on Sunday March 6, 1-4 p.m. Admission is free and everyone is welcome. In addition, the Visual Arts Centre has planned several special events for the tenth anniversary of the show. Free videos will be shown on Thursday Thursday nights at seven, and a series of workshops in leather work, fabric appliqué, appliqué, and transfer dyeing will be given by previous jurors Paul Williams, Williams, Ellen Adams, and Judith Tinkl respectively. Fifteen members and two guests were present. President Ruth Carrington welcomed welcomed all present and opened the meeting with the Institute Ode, followed followed by O Canada. The theme of this meeting was "Family Affairs". Louise Bell introduced our guest speaker , owner and manager of the Darlington Mushroom Farm on Taunton Rd. He introduced his wife Penny, as his Goodwill Chairman. He went on to give us a detailed and most interesting story of the growing and marketing of mushrooms from the planting of the "spawn". It takes 42 days in all to grow and harvest mushrooms, picked by hand by women. women. Penny distributed some interesting interesting recipes using mushrooms. A hearty vote of thanks to this couple proved how appreciative the ladies were. The motto was read - A merry heart cures more ills than medicine. We were urged to visit and telephone friends, smile as much as possible. Humour is one of God's most marvelous marvelous gifts. Humour makes the heavy load light. Roll Call was answered with the reading of very humorous selections, creating many hearty laughs. Minutes were read and approved. The Treasurer's report was presented by Helen Millson. Happy birthday was sung to Audrey Shirk. Collection was taken along with Pennies for Friendship. Irene English passed on to the group a request from the District District W.I. for a volunteer to become Resolutions Officer. Correspondence was read. A resolution resolution was read from the Federated Women's Institute of Ontario. This resolution concerned the recycling of old tires and requests that a test bum at St. Mary's Cement be allowed. Lise challenged T.M.'s to discuss current events in parliament. Table Topics to "think and speak" on your feet is an important skill that will help you be successful. You loam how to present your thoughts in a clear and organized organized manner with a minimum of preparation., The topic is announced and members are called on to give a one minute talk on the topic. First place mark was 90%. Stephanie sang "Send in the Clowns" by Stephen Sondheim from the musical musical "A Little Night Music".
