By Brad Kellv- One Name Needs to be Added to League Trophy Chris McCarthy's absence was noted during trophy presentations that were made prior to the start of Sunday night's Central Ontario Jr. C league final between Bowmanville and Port Perry. Three goal tenders from the Bowmanville Eagles -- Barry Crawford, Drew Campbell, and Jason Bailey - sauntered to centre ice where league convener Andy McLauchlin was awaiting. Smiling, all three accepted the league trophy for posting the lowest goals against average during the regular regular season, and proudly posed for a photograph holding their individual trophies. McCarthy was not part of the threesome, having left Bowmanville in late November to join the Richmond Hill Riot Junior 'A' hockey club of the Metro League. But, in six games with the Eagles at the start of the year, McCarthy posted a 3.66 goals against average on a team that started with only one win in its first five outings. Of the six games that he did play in through the first two months of the season, Bowmanville won four. With Campbell as the team's overage player and McCarthy, a local product, serving as the backup, goaltending wasn't one of the positions that Bowmanville was concerned with. But along came Crawford who, since joining the team, has been just sensational, winning the league's rookie of the year award. With three goalies in camp, McCarthy felt it would be best to move on. "I didn't want to be in a three goalie rotation. I wanted to get away from that," he said of the decision to leave Bowmanville. Richmond Hill came calling, and McCarthy answered. He had attended attended their training camp in the fall, and was the last goaltender cut When an opening evolved, they sought his services. " "It was awkward at first," said McCarthy of moving to a new team once the season had started. "The bus was going to Wellington for my first game and it stopped in Bowmanville to pick me up. It was weird walking on the bus with 20 strange guys." As a backup goaltender, McCarthy posted a 4.22 goals against average average and a 90.9% save percentage with Richmond Hill. He has no regrets about stepping up to a higher level, and leaving the hometown hockey club in search of better competition. The move may .prove beneficial next year, when he hopes to play for either Laurentian or York university. \ • The only regret he does have, is that Richmond Hill didn't make the playoffs, while Bowmanville are battling for a league championship. "That's great for Bowmanville, but it was my choice to leave." Hopefully, the league won't choose to leave his name off the goalie trophy. V 7? s , J The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville.
