The following following is an informal compendium of information from recent research findings. Among the social and family issues issues that may deeply concern and affect affect teenagers are the following. Some of these affect everyone of course, but young people typically have greater difficulty than, adults do in being listened to. • 1. Fear of the lack of employment opportunities following secondary school, adding to uncertainties about marriage and raising a family. 2. Financial problems, arising often often from the insecurities that families experience when a parent becomes unemployed. 3. Parent's high expectations and pressures on their children to succeed. succeed. Many teenagers experience a hopeless feeling that they can never measure up. 4. An alarmingly common fact about young people's livés is that they're increasingly alienated from their families. 5. Extended families and the support support they've, traditionally provided for young people are disappearing, partly as a result of increased mobility. mobility. 6. Divorce, destabilized families and changing value systems have caused many'young people to feel that they don't belong, that they aren't needed and that their families don't understand them. 7. Teenagers' inability to cope with increased and often inappropriate inappropriate independence has given many of them the feeling that there are no limits, limits, no boundaries in life, no natural constraints. 8. Excessively authoritarian home and/or school environments - can needlessly limit and control teenagers' teenagers' newfound freedoms, adding to their feelings that they aren't trusted or respected. 9. Deterioration of one's belief that relationship with God matters. 10. Breakdown of teenagers' belief belief in the benevolent leadership in school, community and country. 11. The many forms of emotional abuse and disrespect to which teenagers teenagers as a group are routinely subjected in school and community. They're the most "commonly scapegoated members of our society as well as of their families. Motivations for suicidal behavior fall into several categories. 1. Attempts to manipulate others, to gain affection, to punish others, often often the parents. 2. Wanting to escape from an intolerable intolerable or unresolvable situation, such as sexual, physical or emotional abuse or from an unwanted pregnancy. pregnancy. 3. Wanting to join a deceased relative. relative. 4. Wanting to avoid punishment for a crime, real or imagined. 5. Wanting to be punished for a crime, real or imagined. Wanting to become a martyr. 6. Wanting revenge. 7. Wanting control over their own lives, suicide can be a defiant gesture of independence, particularly for teenagers. Following are some factors that may place individuals at risk of suicide. suicide. 1. Loss - death or separation from parent, friend, pet. Loss of energy and good health through accident or long illness. 2. History of suicidal thinking or suicidal attempts by family members, close relatives or friends. 3. Depressed mood, sustained over time. 4. Morbid preoccupation with death. 5. Excessive fears. 6. Strong antisocial behavior. ^- 7. Feelings of self-depreciation and worthlessness. 8. Sense of alienation and isolation. isolation. 9. Family history of mental illness. illness. The following are possible (but aren't necessarily) clues or signs of dangerous suicidal thoughts and/or feelings. When they're in combination combination rather than isolated, they're obviously obviously of much greater concern as factors predisposing teenagers toward suicide. 1. Repeated verbal or written references references to death or suicide. 2. Noticeable and prolonged withdrawal. withdrawal. 3. On-going lethargy and depression. depression. 4. Deterioration in school performance. performance. 5. Habitual absenteeism. 6. Frequent unexplained ciying spells. 7. Appetite and/or sleep disturbance. disturbance. 8. Deterioration in grooming. 9. Increased use of or dependence on alcohol or drugs. 10. Uncharacteristic hyperactivity. 11. Marked change in self-image and self-confidence. 12. Other deaths, losses and traumas traumas as possible precipitating factors. 13. Hostility, angry or assaultive behavior. 14. Repeated complaints of physical physical pain. 15. Frequent feelings of guilt. 16. Tendency toward self-injury or reckless behavior. These lists aren't an attempt to profile pre-suicidal teenagers or anyone anyone else.
