INFORMATION ( Al l. 623-5100 Capsule Comments with Neale McLean, b.sc. Phm. March is National Epilepsy Month. This year's theme is... "Research: for Someone With Epilepsy, It's Another Word For Hope". Epilepsy Is not a disease. It Is a disorder of certain nerve cells In the brain. It cannot be spread from one person to another although there is an inherited tendency in some people. About half of I % of all the people In the world have epilepsy. It is a myth that people with epilepsy are likely to have a seizure any moment Most haven't had a seizure for years and will remain seizure-free when they take their medications In the proper manner. Yehudi Menuhin, the famous violinist once said that expectant mothers should sing to their unborn child during pregnancy If they want the child to grow up contented and well-balanced. Fasting Is the abstinence from food for a period of time. Did you know that when someone goes on a fast the body's metabolism slows down as much as 22%? It speeds up when food Is eaten again. Medications are like apples ... they will not keep forever. Clean out your medicine medicine cabinet today and get rid of all those rotten apples. You can bring them to our pharmacy for safe disposal. Pharmacist Orthotist Bowmanville Clinic Pharmacy Ltd. 222 King St. East Bowmanville, Ont. There have been tremendous changes in health care 'and the practice of pharmacy in those 25 years. March 1969 March 1994 1. We started out keeping drug histories and almost dll pharmacies do now. 2. Drug plans are widespread and most employee groups over 5 -10 people have some type of drug plan insurance. 3. Pharmacists should supply the patient with information on what the drug is used for - any special instruction about when or how to take the drug - special storage requirements - any side effects that are common and which might worry or impair the patient in any way; and the patient should feel free to phone about unexpected problems related to the drug - try to screen for problems with any other current medication Amoxicillin was brand new, and a large percentage of the drugs used today were not available in 1969. In fact, the theories for their use had not been discovered. It has been an exciting time to have lived and worked in almost every occupation, and this is certainly true for pharmacy. I would like to thank all our friends and customers from all these years for their friendship and patronage. Our community has been a very hospitable, and friendly place, and I hope we can all work to keep it so. Neale McLean 1. Very few pharmacies maintained patient drug histories. 2. Drug plans were uncommon. Some employee groups, such as General Motors and Goodyear had negotiated coverage, but there was no universal drug coverage for senior citizens. 3. Pharmacists were not encouraged to give advice to a person receiving a drug prescribed by the doctor, in fact the name of the drug did not even appear on the prescription label. > ■ - •: .
