The Independent, Canadian Statesman Weekender, Bowmanville, Saturday, March 12,1994 9 Strong Goaltending Leads Newcastle to a 5-3 Victory Clarke High School Midget Girls Finish Second at COSSA ; : «§gk ■ .. v.V: *r:>. .>ÿ by Robert E. Stiles The Newcastle Oldtimers hosted MCL on Sunday, March 6, and went home with a hard-fought 5-3 victory. This game was won by Newcastle because they won the battles along the boards, comers and trenches, and it didn't hurt to have excellent goaltending goaltending from Dan Wilcox, who had MCL players shaking their head when Dan robbed them. Dan looked after the goaltending for Leo Kelly, who was away teaching in Toronto. Newcastle had 16 skaters compared compared to 13 for MCL. Leading the Newcastle attack was Dave Roote with a hat-trick. Bill Perry had a goal and assist, Sandy MacDonald had a goal, Chris Hurst, George Sainsbury, Bob Henry and Grant Flintoff all had one assist each. MCL scoring- was handled by Ed Carey, Rich Carey and George Svetee with one goal each. Luc Perron had the lone assist. The first period saw Newcastle take a 2-0 lead on goals by Sandy MacDonald and Dave Roote. The second period saw Ed Carey score, unassisted, to narrow the Newcastle Newcastle lead to 2-1. Dave Roote scored his second of the game to restore Newcastle's two-goal lead, with Henry Henry assisting, to end the second period at 3-1 for Newcastle. The third period saw Dave Roote complete a hat-trick at 1:33 to give Newcastle a 4-1 lead. Rich Carey got one back for MCL, assisted by Luc Perron. Bill Perry scored an insurance marker, unassisted. George Svetee scored an unassisted marker at 19:07 to narrow Newcastle's lead to 5-3. Newcastle had five penalties in the game, while MCL had two. This was one of the best games to date as it was a fast, aggressive game with lots of scoring chances at both ends of the ice. Newcastle will be travelling to Niagara Niagara Falls for a tournament on March 11-13. M&M Meats Lose by Kim Gadd M&M Meats lost 7-3 against the Bowmanville Sports Shop team Sunday Sunday evening. The Hornets didn't give the Carnation crew much room, as Sean Mitchell, along with Chris Burritt and the airtight defence, stymied many scoring efforts. Hutton Transport gave the Hornets a good tussle as Kevin Brooks drilled a shot past Rob Vale from Bob Williams Williams to start things off in the 10:00 a.m. game. Steven King knotted the count on a set-up from Sean Mitchell. Shawn Linnell, with help from Clint Kmmmenacher, put the Hornets out in front. Then, Micheal Sellers, from • Chris Burritt and Cling Krummenach- er, rounded out the scoring.
