Hilsden, Senior Pastor IN CONCERT Peacemakers During Schoolyard Disputes The Northumberland-Clarington Board of Education will train about 80 students in conflict resolution at a special one-day workshop to be held March 24 at Trinity United Church in Cobourg. "I like to think we're being proactive, proactive, that we're acting before there is a serious need for it," says Doris Nelson, a behaviour resource teacher with the board and one of the organizers organizers of the pilot project. Six students from each of 11 schools will be trained to deal with school-yard arguments. "Anything so long as it's not so serious they could get hurt themselves," says Nelson. The students are in Grades Six to Eleven. The student peacemakers will leam how to either guide the arguing parties to a resolution or to bring them inside the school to a "mediation "mediation panel" composed of students. Nelson says, the students include those from schools who already have a program underway as well as those from schools which haven't yet started started a conflict resolution program. "TV Ontario, for example, recently featured featured the program at Beatrice Strong Public School," she said. Students participating in the full day at Trinity United Church will return return to their school and train other students in conflict resolution. "The safe school is a Board emphasis emphasis right now and we're doing this to re-inforce that goal." Nelson says conflict resolution is "one of the student learning outcomes outcomes in the new Common Curriculum Curriculum is that they be willing and able to resolve conflicts in a co-operative and non-violent manner."
