12 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Wednesday, March 16,1994 Playoff Series Will be Dubbed: The Comeback The game seven jinx that has hovered over the heads of the Bowmanville Bowmanville Eagles for the past five years has officially been lifted. Bowmanville's misfortunes in game seven of a playoff series were started by Port Perry back in the 1990 league finals. Ironically, it was the same team Bowmanville played on Sunday at the Recreation Complex to finally break the jinx. During that memorable series to decide the Central League champions of 1989-90, Port Perry upset Bowmanville in overtime of game seven, sending one of the largest crowds to watch a Jr. C game at the Recreation Complex home disappointed. The following year, Bowmanville extended Uxbridge to a seventh game in the league finals. But Uxbridge prevailed with a 1-0 win on home ice. Last year, Bowmanville showed signs of breaking out of the string of bad luck. In the opening round, they emerged victorious over Lakefield in the seventh game of their series. Bowmanville then went on to sweep Port Perry and Little Britain to win their first league championship in nine years. . And this year, trailing three games to one to Port Perry, a seventh game seemed doubtful. But it was after the 5-4 overtime loss in game four of the series at Port Perry that things seemed to turn around for Bowmanville. "I said to the guys on the bus ride home that (Port Perry) has to come here and beat us twice. We still had two of the next three games in our bam," said captain Brad Robinson. "When we were down three games to one, everyone came to the rink lor game five and knew it wasn't over yet," added Todd Cannings. Facing elimination in game five, Bowmanville stayed alive on Jeremie Pate's overtime goal to win 3-2. That victory gave Bowmanville the lift, that coach Mark Watson had been looking for. "We just needed to get another win under our belts to turn it around.' ' In game six on Saturday in Port Perry, Bowmanville managed a 4-3 victory to force a seventh and deciding game. It was the fourth time in the series that the outcome of a game was decided by one goal. "Port Perry put their best effort into winning at home, and it was a close game," said Watson. That loss on home ice seemed to break the hearts of Port Perry, who, ^after falling behind in game seven, couldn't rally to get back in the game. There are also tennis courts, soccer fields, and an indoor swimming pool. All of these are utilized throughout the camp. It was while attending university that he decided it was time to put something back into the game he cherished. "When I was growing up, there weren't a lot of people involved in trying to improve the game," explained explained the Bowmanville resident. "In the States, the Canadian kids were considered to be so far behind. "I decided to put something back into the game to see Canadian kids establish themselves as pro players." A coach since the age of 18, Walters Walters was an assistant coach with the Oshawa Legionaires junior baseball club last season. As well, he was a consultant for The Baseball Book and Trophy that was written by local local resident Bill Humber. It is this vast experience that he draws from when conducting the Academy during the summer. "We teach the kids, review what we've taught, practice, then discuss what they've learned. Those are the four areas that are really important to us," said Walters.
