2 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Wednesday, March 16,1994 First Plant Outside of the United States to Win Honor Bowmanville Plant Wins Goodyear Profitable Growth Award by Lorraine Manfredo Goodyear's Annual Profitable Growth Award was presented to company officials at the Bowmanville Bowmanville engineered product division on Thursday, March 10th. "Bowmanville is the first plant outside the United States that's ever won it," said Plant Manager Wally Hicks. The trophy has been presented presented annually, since 1991, to the manufacturing manufacturing operation recording the most significant improvement in profitability over the previous fiscal year. "The rate of improvement is measured and compared to other plants," said Mr. Hicks. It can be awarded to a plant that has gone from the red into the black or to a facility that has exceeded its previous previous profits by a large margin. "In 1993 we had a turn-around oyer the previous year of approximately approximately $2 million, which is a significant significant improvement, particularly in view of the tough economy last year," said Mr. Hicks. This good showing was matched by two other plants - one in Brazil and the other in Norfolk, Nebraska. Goodyear operates 22 engineered product divisions in addition to its regular production facilities worldwide. worldwide. Four plants are in Canada. According to Goodyear officials in Bowmanville, a favorable exy change rate on the dollar helped boost export activity, especially in the Pacific Rim and Eastern European European countries. For the first time last year, the Bowmanville Goodyear plant supplied steel cable conveyor belting equipment to copper mining outfits in Bulgaria and in Peru, to a coal terminal in Indonesia, and an iron ore operation in China. Co-operation with the 217 United Rubber Workers of Local 189 was also a major factor in productivity gains and profitability, Mr. Hicks stresses. Shop floor personnel were consulted consulted about existing operating systems systems and asked to identify how production production could be improved. A 30% productivity improvement in the manufacturing of steel cable belting was realized . through this cooperative cooperative approach. Input from factory factory workers helped trim the time it once took to change from one belt to another on the production line. What was once a 24-hour operation, has been reduced to six hours. Britt Murphy, president of local 189, says the employees who work on the production line recognize the stake they have in the success of the plant and are starting to put morel into it "Morale has been a lot better; than it has been in years," he said. In presenting the trophy, Frank Hilder, Director of Product Manufacturing Manufacturing from Akron, Ohio, said the co-operation of the union was crucial crucial to the success of the local plant. "The co-operation of workers and management is important in , helping us identify business problems," problems," he said. Unions and management management "have fought this battle long enough and it ain't going to work that way. The competition is too ' tough." The Annual Profitable Growth Award will remain in Bowmanville for four months, after which time it will go to the other plants which ;> showed equally excellent perfor- i mances in 1993. Management and staff at the Bowmanville Goodyear plant are the proud recipients of the 1993 Profitable Profitable Growth Award. Increased exports and better labour/management relations are behind the local plant's $2 million tum-around since 1992.
