James is improving in health. Surely the spring weather will cheer us all and make us feel better. It was back to school on Monday for some of the school pupils. Have to watch the cyclists! Masters Graydcn and Adrien Hunt, Pontypool, spent Thursday with their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Powell. On Saturday evening, March 19, several Newcastle residents enjoyed the roast beef dinner at Newtonville United Church and the entertainment provided by Yvonne and Lyle Bender and daughter Dolores. On Wednesday, March 16, a bus load of Newcastle Senior Citizens enjoyed enjoyed a trip to Hamilton. At Carmen's Carmen's about five hundred patrons enjoyed enjoyed turkey dinner and apple pie, and entertainment by the Good Time Music Hall performers, Dave Hoy, pianist, Jack Thomson, drums, Brock Patterson, banjo, Randy Dawdy and Louise Palmer, vocals. Of course, the theme was Irish, songs for St, Patrick's Patrick's Day. A stop at the Pickering Town Centre Centre on the return trip completed the day's outing. Much planning goes into the organizing of such bus trips. Thanks to the committee for this one! Mrs. Maurice Coulter, Downs- view, was a weekend visitor with Mr. and Mrs. Jack Crago, Saturday afternoon afternoon the trio visited Morley and Leta McAllister, Elizabethvillc, and also called on Ken and Bertha Trcw. In the evening a delicious birthday dinner dinner in honour of Floyd Powell at the home of Russell and Maureen Powell and family, was enjoyed. As in most family gatherings, great was the reminiscing. reminiscing. Russell had received a little school newspaper from Stanley Brown. This copy of The Lake Shore Broadcast had been edited on May 19th, 1938. All the senior pupils of Lake Shore S.S. No. 2 at that time had items printed there - Mildred •Brown, Leonard Lawlor, Bernice Brown, Olive Brown, Jack Brown, Ross Adams, Archie Hendry, Billie Jaynes, Joyce Martin, Audrey Adams, Adams, Jean Brown, Bill Taylor, Donald, Donald, Hazel and Ronald Powell. Hazel's Hazel's still at it! On Wednesday evening the Orono and District Fiddle Club members once again provided a great evening's evening's entertainment for a great crowd. Oh Thursday evening at the Newcastle Newcastle Community Hall the Seniors enjoyed their regular card games. Congratulations and best wishes to George and Lana Rickard on their March 27 wedding anniversary. On Sunday .afternoon Mr. and Mrs. Brenton Rickard, Mr. and Mrs. Ross Allin and Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Powell enjoyed pancakes and entertainment entertainment at Sandy Flats Sugarbush in Warkworth. They had a chat with Stewart and Leslc Campbell who were assisting there. The Campbells were former residents. Sorry to report Mrs. Margaret Pearce is a patient in Memorial Hospital, Hospital, Bowmanville. On Saturday evening Mrs. Gladys Wood was a dinner guest of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Wood and family, celebrating celebrating a couple of birthdays. On Sunday evening Shirley and Harold Wood, Oshawa, Stewart and Jean Wood, Orono, visited Mrs. Gladys Gladys Wood. Sunday dinner guests of Mrs. Elizabeth Elizabeth Skelding were George and Madeleine Buckley Bowmanville and Raymond Chapman. We notice that Daylight Saving Time begins on April 3rd. That's when wè set our clocks ahead one hour. It is also Easter Sunday! A recent holiday in Las Vegas was enjoyed by Ben and Narda Hoogkamp. Horticultural Meeting On Tuesday evening, March 15, President Wylma Allin welcomed new members to the Newcastle Horticultural Horticultural Society meeting. Minutes of the January meeting were read by Secretary Dorclla Chard. Much business business was discussed. Member Vicki- Lesnick introduced Carol Mostert who gave a most detailed and interesting interesting talk on preserving plants, flowers flowers and branches, in glycerine. Her many dried arrangements attested to her successful preservation recipes. Delicious lunch was served by Janet Pacden and Jean Rickard. Year books for 1994, the eightieth anniversary year of Newcastle Horticultural Society, Society, arc now available for members. Newcastle Lions News On March 9, twenty-seven Lions welcomed Charles Stevens to a regular regular Lion's Club meeting. A delicious, roast beef dinner was served by the Newcastle U.C.W. After dinner Lion Dave Gibson introduced the guest speaker, Charles Stevens. Charles is the principal grower of High Bush Blueberries in Clarington, a business that he started in 1978 when he brought the first stock into this area. He took the audience through the long process of planting, pruning, irrigating irrigating and finally harvesting this delicious fruit. The Lions learned that, like most other agricultural crops, it is not as lucrative as it looks. After about five years the plants start to produce and three years later they come into full production. At one point in the process Charles related to the assembly that he almost ploughed the plants down. Many questions followed followed the presentation and Charles who is also a Lion with the Bowmanville Bowmanville Club was thanked by new Lion Greg Forget. Lion Gord Moulton won the 50/50 draw, totalling $12. Donations were approved to Durham Durham Christian School, the Navy League, Clarke High School and McIntyre Park for the disabled. Nominations were finalized ' to make way for the Club Elections to take place in the near future, the new executive will take office on July 1. It was decided to allow the Boy Scouts Group Committee to use the Lions Room for four Committee meetings this year. The Easter Bunny Committee urged all Lions to get out and sell their allotted bunnies. The next Newcastle Lions Club meeting will be in the Lions Room at the Newcastle Community Hall on March 23. St. George's Anglican Church At the eleven o'clock service on Sunday, March 20th, the infant son of David and Lisa Gaffield was baptized baptized Evan Michael by the Reverend Robert Hartley. His godparents are Paul and Karen Purves. Communion was celebrated at eight and eleven. The Easter Parish letter was distributed at both services. The all-male choir was under the direction direction of organist, Ron Tidy. Devotional was presented by Wylma Allin and Sheila Stiles. Mrs. Marie Pcdwell played the piano for the singing of hymns. President Ann Cox chaired the business part of the program. Social Social convenor Carole Brunton asked for support for the March 26 birthday party for Jack Gordon given by his wife Gloria. Guest speaker Blaikie Rowsell gave a wonderful talk and slide presentation of the medical missionary missionary work in Guyana. On Sunday at Newcastle United Church two children were baptized by Reverend Donald Stiles: Riley James Johnson, son of Daniel and Gail (Sicbarth) Johnson and Alyssa Pre Ward, daughter of Fred and Shirley Shirley (Cameron) Ward. An Easter Tableau portraying The Passion of Jesus was presented by the Sunday School children. Amanda Storks was the principal narrator. Other readers were Tiffany Willson, Sarah Little, Amanda Willson, Vicky Smithson, Michele Smithson, Leah Kuhne and Jaime Wright. Matthew Brown read Nathan Wright's part.
