LINDSAY (705) 324-3533 Hospital Program Offers Answers for rs CHEV OLDS GEO CADILLAC Hwy. 35 S., Lindsay 0 From Page One that there's no mystery and they know what to expect and how to deal with it," says Mr. Howard. "If they've started using a medical inhaler, inhaler, we make sure they're using it properly, and explain what their medication does." The program also includes the teaching of breathing exercises, instruction instruction on how to keep airways clear, and tests of the respiratory system to measure lung capacity and efficiency. A measuring device called a spirometer spirometer records how much air can be taken in and the rate at which air is expelled, which can indicate the size of airways, condition of the lungs and the presence of chronic lung disease. The tests can also show how the respiratory system is responding to medication. The spirometer was donated by the Hospital Auxiliary, a joint hospital's hospital's vital volunteer group, and the Memorial Hospital Foundation, a charitable foundation that raises money for equipment not provided by the Ministry of Health. Memorial Hospital also holds an asthma outreach program in cooperation cooperation with the Lung Association Association of Durham Region, held on three consecutive Thursdays every month at 6:30 p.m. There are a lot of misconceptions misconceptions about asthma, says Mr. Howard. Howard. "Asthma can't be cured but it can be managed in 97 per cent of cases," says Mr. Howard. "We can control the shortness of breath, the wheezing, the cough, the runny eyes and runny nose." Symptoms are controlled by medication but equally important is the need to identify the things that trigger an asthma attack, which can then be removed or lessened. "If a child wakes up in the middle middle of the night coughing, or has coughing attacks when waiting up every morning, it's probably dust mites," says Mr. Howard. "If it's thought the family cat might cause an asthma attack don't let the child sit with it in the lap or sleep in the same room." He adds: "I wouldn't automatically automatically get rid of the family pet. Try limiting the exposure and sec what that does." Some types of asthma are induced induced by exercise, but that doesn't rule out an active lifestyle. "The nose and mouth warm the air we take in and make it humid." says Mr. Howard. "During exercise, exercise, the breathing is faster and therefore the air becomes colder and dryer than normal, which can trigger a reaction. "But tltis can be overcome by warming up slowly while the lungs get accustomed to the change in air and by a cooling down period to adjust once more." He says that advice goes for any sport, but swimming in an indoor pool where the water is warm and humid is particularly good. "Hie child doesn't have to sit out, doesn't have to be different. Most can lead a perfectly normal life." HELP KEEP RED CROSS READY!
