Reflections on life in ^ Claringlon over the past two centuries By Sher Lectooze , The census of 1842, and the census census of 1851 have given us an insight into the manner in which the early settlers of Darlington lived. By far, the majority of homes arc still of log construction at that time, with a handful handful of 'shanty' dwellings and only three or four 'masonry' and brick dwellings in the whole of the township. township. We can see that even after ten or fifteen years on their land, these people people lived in conditions that we would find hard to endure. As well as hardships in daily conditions, conditions, there were sorrows too; the loss of loved ones. Following are excerpts excerpts from a diary kept by Ann Libby Libby Treleven, as recorded in Marguerite Marguerite Fraser's book, A Place Called Solina. It is the record of the family's journey to Canada, in 1855. Sunday, April 15th: Just off Falmouth. Falmouth. I think the sea air is too strong for her. Wednesday 25th: I am afraid we shall lose dear baby, she is much weaker. May 2nd; I have not written any since April 25th when my dear baby was so ill, but I believe no one thought her so near death. She did not appear to be worse than usual, but she died in my arms. Oh! What a trial when in about 2 hours her little body was committed to the deep, and the blue waters closed over her leaving leaving no trace where her remains are...but it matters not where her dust is so long as her soul has gone to God who gave it... It seems that the sorrows and hardships began for many long before before they set foot on the soil of this new land. And for others it came after the families were well situated. The following following is an account from the writing of Ralph R. Tooley, known by many in the Courtice area as Longboat. "Two local boys were drowned in father's big mill pond. I was 13 years old at the time. Many things about this affair were unusual. First every member of the Tooley family were away from the property at the time..." "Fred Morrow, the youngest son of Robert Morrow, was sitting on a timer that dad kept in front of the waste way. Fred was just able to swim a .short distance. Across from Fred standing on the clay bank at the west side of the pond, was Norman Oke, another young boy who never had learned to swim. He had two ce- tfdapblocks on.which he had nailed a 'leather strap to keep him floating in the'water. The clay bank of the pond sloped down almost sheer into the deepest part of the mill pond. Oke intended intended to use the cedar blocks but when he threw them ahead of himself, himself, they floated away. He thought he could wade out to retrieve the blocks bpt he went straight down in the water. Fred Morrow heard Oke yell and bravely started to swim to save Norman. But when Fred reached Oke, the boy wrapped his arms around Fred and they both went under under and never came up until pulled up by Sam Trick, a neighbour, and my brother, Ed. Two boys drove their horse and buggy at a gallop to Jo. Braunds for help. My dad Gus, and I knew all the short cuts and we ran like mad for the pond. Gus took off the boards to let the water leave the pond, but two creeks entered this pond and it was many hours before the pond was lowered. lowered. In the meantime Gus and Sam Trick kept on trying to reach the bodies. bodies. Even when the water had been lowered it was so muddy nothing could be seen. However by using dad's rake one body was brought up. It was Norman Okc's body. My father father was always an immensely strong man and he had met death often. He took this poor lad in his arms and carried carried him and laid him on the grass on the west side of our pond...Later, Fred Morrow's body came up and Dad carried this brave b oy over to his father and again laid him at his feet. I'll never forget the frozen expression expression on that father's face, Robert Morrow never got over this great tragedy." Sickness and accidents were not the only thing that caused sorrow for the early families. Murder, too, happened happened as in the case of the death of Thomas Conant. It was during the 1837 Rebellion. Thomas was spending the evening at the local tavern (five miles west of Bowmanville) and by all accounts was 'in his cups', as the saying of the time went. As Thomas left the tavern, a dispatch dispatch rider arrived, no doubt looking to wash away the dust of the road. The rider was on his way to Toronto with dispatches for the Government there. Thomas stumbled, and his hand brushed the reins of die rider's horse, or got caught in them. Remember, these were tease times, and this was a government man on government business. He did not know Conant, nor ids politics, The apparent act of tampering with a government man in his course of duty was enough. Tlie rider drew his sword and brought it down on Thomas' head. End of story. The Coroner's Jury brought in a verdict of justifiable homicide, which caused much criticism in die area, and much sorrow in the Conant family- family- The effects of the 1837 Rebellion were felt here in Darlington in other ways, too, but that story will be told later. Certain species of bacteria are sometimes found In raw oysters. These bugs can cause diarrhea If there are enough of them. Researchers In New Orleans have found that dousing the oysters In Louisiana Hot Sauce or Tabasco will kill these bacteria after only one minute. Alters the oyster taste some, though. Giving a baby a nighttime botde of juice or formula Is found to be a big factor In producing cavities. Cows milk didn't cause this problem. Evidently the casein, calcium calcium and phosphorus In cows milk have cavity-fighting effects. Those safety caps we put on your prescription bottles are taken for granted today. But since 1972, they have helped reduce accidental fatalities In children under the age of five by almost 80%. Did you know that our bodies experience a slight drop In temperature between 3 and 4 p.m. each day! This might account for a slight sleepy feeling we sometimes feel at that time. A good time to take a nap. We place great Importance In face-to-face communication with our customers about the proper use of their prescriptions.
