PRE-TEEN DANCE -- To help alleviate some of the increased costs involved with travel during the playoffs, the Bowmanville Eagles will be holding a pre-teen dance at the Memorial Park Clubhouse on Wednesday, March 30, from 6-9 p.m. If the Eagles are fortunate enough to sweep Napanee in their quarter-final series, many of them will be on hand to meet the kids. Skills of Players Improve at March Break Baseball Clinic by Brad Kelly As professional baseball teams get an early start to the season under the sunny climate of Florida, a group of area players was also getting getting into the swing of things. Swing, as in taking some batting practice in the controlled climates of a school gymnasium. The Clarington Baseball Association Association conducted a five-day clinic at Courtice Secondary School that was held in conjunction with the annual March Break for school-aged kids. A total of approximately 40 kids from age 9-12 took advantage of the clinic, which ran from 1-4 p.m. each afternoon. "We were very pleased with the turnout," said Barb Michno, one of six instructors who donated their time to ensure a successful clinic. "It was nice to see the gradual changes that took place in the kids from when they came on Monday, to when they left on Friday. There were a lot of positives." The kids were put through a number of drills that touched on all aspects of baseball. The fundamentals fundamentals of the game were stressed, with an importance placed on keeping the atmosphere fun. As well as personal instruction from the instructors, videos were also used to add some variety. "We touched on everything there was," added Michno. Among the participants who were involved in improving their skills on Friday afternoon was Leah Menard. The 11-year-old Courtice resident plays in a girls' softball league in the summer. "I've learned how to throw really really hard at people, and it's easier to catch now," she said of the many aspects of her game that had improved. improved. Another participant, Sarah Breen, 8, was attending the clinic for, "something to do during the March Break." The Courtice resident plays soccer in the summer, but was contemplating contemplating a move back to baseball this year.
