28 The Independent, Canadian Statesman Weekender, Bowmanville, Saturday, March 26,1994 Single Female Home Buyers on Increase Single female home buyers now outnumber single male home buyers in three of Canada's major cities, according according to a Royal LePage national demographics survey. The,results of the year-long study of 50,000 home buyers across Canada in 1993 also showed an increase in move-up or multi-time buyers as a percentage of all home purchasers. "Since 1990, we've seen a steady increase in the percentage of female home buyers in Vancouver, Toronto and Ottawa," said Bemie Vogt, Royal Royal LePage Senior Vice President and General Manager. "In Vancouver, for example, female home buyers represented represented 55.6% of all single purchasers in 1993. In Toronto, the breakdown if was even higher with 58.1% of all of the buyers being female. In Ottawa, 54.3% were female purchasers." On a national basis, the presence of single female home buyers has increased increased substantially since 1990. Royal LePage data shows that 48.1% of all single home buyers were women women in 1993, up from 44.3% in 1990. Vogt says the increase can be attributed attributed to a number of factors, including including low interest rates and government government incentive programs. He also cited a recent StatsCan study which showed that single men and women have comparable incomes. In Montreal, the percentage of single single buyers who are women also increased increased year-over-year - where, in 1993, 46.3% of buyers were single women versus 45.8% in 1992. "Nationally, there's almost a 50/ 50 split between single female and male home buyers, with the exception exception of Edmonton, Regina, Hamilton and Halifax," said Vogt. Across Canada, first-time home buyers actually declined marginally on a percentage basis - down to 36% from 37% in 1992 - as move-up buyers buyers took greater prominence in 1993. However, there were some notable variances. First-time buyers formed a larger portion of the market in Calgary Calgary (37% of homes purchased versus versus 31% in 1992); Hamilton (47% versus 39% in 1992), and Halifax (56% versus 41% in 1992). "Based on our tracking, I think it's safe to declare the federal government's government's home buying incentive program's program's a success," said Vogt.
