The Independent, Canadian Statesman Weekender, Bowmanville, Saturday, March 26,1994 3 With year end results just in, the Northumberland-Claringtbn Board of Education has confirmed that its energy efficiency improvement program program (EEIP) has realized 35 per cent greater energy savings than originally anticipated. While savings savings were expected to be about $291,000 for 1993, an analysis of year-end energy bills shows actual savings of $393,000. Basés on a comprehensive energy energy analysis, the Board entered into a seven-year guaranteed energy performance performance improvement contract with Tescor Energy Services to: • low-cost energy initiatives at 27 schools; • convert from electricity to gas, and replace cooling equipment and lighting at Bowmanville High School; and, • convert lighting of 58 buildings, buildings, Because the lighting conversion of 58 buildings was only recently completed, overall year-end perfor mance of this phase will not be known for another year. A portion of this $5.43 million Energy Efficiency Improvement Program is being financed through an incentive grant won from Ontario Hydro (between $1.24 and $1.70 million, depending on the actual energy energy savings). The balance of the program is being being financed by the NCBE. Superintendent of Business, Ron Sudds, said, "I am delighted to see that we have been able to complete this project ahead of schedule, that the results are even better than expected, expected, and without financial burden to the Board." With the lighting conversion, now complete, the NCBE estimates that the energy efficiency improvements improvements will result in an annual saving of more than $568,000, for a total of $3.90 million over the seven-year contract with Tescor. Dick Malowney, Director of Education Education for the NCBE, added, "These year-end results show that through aggressive and cooperative action, we can fulfil our / commitments commitments to improving our students' learning environment, to being environmentally environmentally responsible, and to im proving the Board's long-term financial financial performance." By relying on local contractors to complete the work at the NCBE's 58 facilities, this project is estimated to have supported the employment of over 30 local tradespersons and injected over $700,000 into the local economy over the past year. According to Sudds, "We are very pleased the Board of Trustees supported our recommendation to use the money this program will save to undertake other building facility facility improvements that will be needed. So, this program not only results in direct and immediate energy energy efficiency improvements in all our schools, it also provides us with the money for other facility improvements improvements which we couldn't otherwise otherwise afford." Clarington's Acting Mayor, Larry Hannah (left), signed a proclamation proclamation declaring April to be New Homes Month in Clarington last Tuesday, March 22. He is shown here with Peter Abramczuk, President President of the Oshawa Durham Home Builders' Association.
