Ron will have a share of $4,630 in prize money to be distributed among the five divisions of deer, duck, turkey, goose and moose. He will also proceed to the Canadian Callin' Championships, which will be held in Toronto. Ron was the World Champion moose caller in 1983, and the World Masters Champion moose caller in 1993. Since teaching his daughter how to moose call, she has been a three-time Canadian Junior Moose Calling Champion. _ . Popular 3 on 3 Basketball Tourney Returns May 6-7 It was three years ago, while lazing around on the couch watching the March Madness of college basketball transpire, that the idea of bringing a similar tournament to this area was conceived. Hence, the birth of our very own Canadian Statesman 3 on 3 Basketball Basketball Tournament. The idea was two-fold. One, it was designed to give the youth of our area something to participate in that would be both fun and competitive. Two, it helped to increase our exposure in the community. On both accounts, the tournament was a huge success. Over 140 kids participated in that first-ever tournament , . The évent even received an award from the Ontario Community Newspaper Association. We put our collective heads together and operated one again the following following year. As it turnedout, last year's tournament was even better than the first. Registration numbers were up, and because of space limitations, we had to turn some teams away. A pattern is certainly developing here, and this year is no exception. We are pleased to once again offer our. much-heralded 3 on 3 Basketball Basketball Tournament. / The dates for this year's two-day event will be Friday, May 6 and Saturday, Saturday, May 7, with the venue unchanged from the previous two years. Bowmanville High School will again serve as the headquarters for our third annual tournament. The format of the tournament will remain unchanged from the previous previous two, as kids aged 10-18 are eligible to participate. Age divisions have been assigned as follows: 10-12,13-15, and 16-18. There is both a boys' and girls' division for each age category. Teams are guaranteed three games, with trophies being awarded to the 'A' and 'B' division champions, and medallions to the *C' and 'D' winners. winners. We are in the midst of putting together a registration package for each participant. Included is a commemorative tank top. And, if we continue to get the, support that we have in the past from local businesses, a couple of coupons will also be included. As well, refreshments will be available for the entire weekend for the competitors. If the previous two years are any indication, these kids can sure.put away a lot of liquid. The tournament will likely get under way at 6:00 p.m. on Friday evening, evening, and continue through until 10:00 p.m. Saturday will open with games around 9:00 a.m., with the whole tournament coming to a close around 5:00 p.m. The only aspect of the tournament that we are being forced to change is the registration fee. Because of increasing costs, we've had to up the fee to $50 per team this year, which is an increase of only $10. Though we aren't pleased with the increase, we will continue in our pursuit to provide the kids with value for their dollar. To make it as easy as possible for those interested in participating, a registration form is included in today's sport pages. The deadline for registrations registrations is April 20, and we encourage teams to sign up as early as possible possible to avoid being left out. v I y The Canadian Legion Branch 178 Midget Toros held off a furious third period charge to defeat the Newmarket Redmen 5-4 and advance advance to the York-Simcoe league championship against Oshawa Rotary. Rotary. Doug Parkin shot Bowmanville ahead 1-0 with a slapshot from the blueline with Luke Akey and Mike Sullivan earning assists. Jeff Dart increased the lead to 2-0 with a backhand goal from Jamie Shetler and Chris Heffeman. After Newmarket scored, Allen Lacey deflected a shot by Jason Hoffman past a sprawling Newmarket Newmarket goalie. Mike Parks also earned an assist. Jason Jeffreys picked up a rebound and scored the fourth Bowmanville Bowmanville goal from Akey and Sullivan. Sullivan. The eventual game winner was scored by Nick Hand from Dart and Shetler. Hand appeared to score again, but when the goal was disallowed, disallowed, Newmarket, sensing a second second life, had the Toros reeling and scored three quick goals to set up a tense final four minutes which saw Bowmanville kill off a questionable penalty call. The Toros had taken the first game of the series 5-1 with Shetler and Lacey scoring twice and Dart adding a single marker. Jeffreys and Derek Arnold recorded two assists each, with single helpers coming from Dart, Shetler, Hoffman and Parkin. The goaltending of Clayton Ren- dell arid Brian Pickard continues to provide support for the Toros. Coach Howie Dart has been pleased with the recent défensive improvement of the team and adds that against a team with the offensive offensive capabilities of Oshawa, a solid defensive effort by every player is necessary. If the regular season games are any indication, then it should be a very spirited and entertaining series. Game times are not yet available.
