You cai imagine the difficulties, sometimes, of deciding the particular spelliig of a name based on a handwriting that is unfamiliar to us. Well, that scenario unfolded last week with a name from the photo of the Newcastle Figure Skaters who participated at the Unicom Fair competition. One of the names should have read Michelle Schyff, not Schuff. In attendance at the competition from May 24-26 will be his parents, lending their vocal support. "I don't know what the competition will be like, but I hope to finish in the top five." Meanwhile, here at home, fellow members from the Maple Leaf Karate Club will undoubtedly be offering their moral support. After all, they have already offered their financial support to the tune of a $500 donation to help defray some of the expenses Murdoch will encounter to ply his skills against the best in the nation. "I don't know what the competiton will be like (in Calgary), but I hope to finish in the top five," said the confident Bowmanville resident. Murdoch finished first overall in the 55+ kilo division after three preliminary competitions were held to fill spots on the provincial team. The 14-year-old did so well that, after top finishes in the first two qualifiers at Newmarket and Belleville, he had already guaranteed himself a spot on the team before the third meet at the University of Toronto was held. "That was a relief," he said. Instructor Charles Kennish has watched Murdoch develop since joining the Maple Leaf club at the age of seven. Though he has always shown a keen interest in the sport, it wasn't until Murdoch returned from an International Karate Association camp last August that Kennish really noticed a marked improvement. "He turned it around from there and has been moving forward ever since. He's a great asset to the club," said Kennish, as members were being put through a strenuous workout. "He's an honest student at school, and seems to excel in most things he does. He puts all of his efforts into karate, and is awesome to watch sometimes," added Kennish. At the National Championships in May, Murdoch will be competing in the 14/15- year-old heavyweight and kata divisions against 24 of the top, young, karate prospects in the country. In preparation for the trip to Calgary, he will be training four nights a week in hopes of being in peak form. "I'm just working on perfecting a few things," he said. "I think he will hold his own," predicted Kennish. "I have a lot of confidence in him. "For someone only 14 years old, he is a real credit to his family." Karate has become somewhat of a family venture for the Murdochs. Paul's father is also a member of the Maple Leaf Club. And his mother is looking forward to making the trip to watch her son perform at the Canadian Championships. "My mom said there was no way she was going to miss it." While Paul has achieved the highest level of success in the household, his father, Tim, is also .a karate enthusiast. He has obtained a 3rd degree kyu brown belt while a member of the Maple Leaf club. - Interestingly, Paul's rank of junior 1st degree black belt is slightly higher. Which raises the question of just who is the better of the two? "When we get in playfights, I always win," said Paul softly so as not to let his father hear him. "Unless he gets a hold of me, then..." he added as his voice trailed off.
