Y Clubs and Organizations Lithuanian Professor Welcomed to Newcastle Lions Club Section Two The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Wednesday, March 30,1994 5 Spring Luncheon for SolinaW.I. The Solina Women's Institute Annual Annual Spring Casserole Luncheon was held Wednesday, March 24th 1994 at noon at the Solina Hall. A bountiful assortment of delicious casseroles, followed by scrumptious, mouthwatering mouthwatering desserts, highlighted the meal. Dorothy Snowden, in charge of the kitchen, and her assistants, did a super job to assure the Luncheon's success. A near-capacity crowd enjoyed enjoyed the afternoon. President Margaret Ford welcomed welcomed everyone and made the draws for the centrepieces, lovely plants. The winners were Helen Werry, Ruth Kerry, Mary Tillcock, Ann Taylor, Dianne Ferguson, Gladys Short, Marilyn Marilyn Donaghuc, Jean Glaspell, Faith Alexander, Helen Devitt, Dorinda McLacllan, Marg Brown, Ann Attik, Norma Welsh and Florence Griffen. Everyone then moved to the upper hall where Marion Peters introduced "Just Plain Folks", Meredith Cutting and Ron Innés, our entertainment for the afternoon. The audience enjoyed the singing and guitar accompani ment of these Toronto Policemen who brought good music, sunshine, and humour in their presentation. The beautiful bouquets of pussywillows pussywillows on the stage, provided by Bernice Hoag added much to this beautiful spring day. Jennifer Bowman, nurse in Emergency Emergency at Bowmanville Hospital speaks on "First Aid". Mrs. A. Vandergaast W.I. Pres, opened the March 14th meeting at 8 p.m. in the C.E. Hall and was in charge of the business. Mrs. Vandergaast Vandergaast welcomed everyone and thanked Mrs. S. Found, 2nd Vice for taking over while she was on holiday. Trixie read a poem entitled 'March'. The Roll Call was 'A first aid hint I remember'. Minutes were read and Treasurer's report was given. Mrs. H. Bradley reported on a meeting held at Port Perry. Mrs. R. Metcalf reported on a District meeting meeting when some business will be decided decided and voted on at our District Annual, Annual, Mrs. H. Prescott of the Nominating Nominating Committee asked for volunteers for 2 offices to fill our slate for 1994- 95. It was agreed that we raise our membership fees to $15 for the new year. We were sorry to leam of the passing of Willie Eewes husband. Money will be given to a charity in his memory. Collection and Pennies for Friendship were taken at, this time. Mrs. Noordstra was in charge of the following program. Mrs. W. Polak Polak spoke on the Motto 'If it is worth doing, do it now. Good intentions don't store well'. She said so much of our lives are spent, wishing for school to start, then on to High School and University. University. Later our life's pace increases as we go out into the working world, marry and raise our children. It seems like we never have time to slow down and smell the roses. Mrs. Polak told of a personal friendship which had started in their school years, continued through marriage marriage and children. Unfortunately, her friend died after the birth of her fifth child so was never able to see her children grow up, marry and have children of their own. Mrs. Polak says as her family gathers for various family celebrations celebrations she never forgets the joy of seeing seeing her own family grow, mature, marry and raise little ones of their own. Mrs. S. Found introduced our speaker Mrs. Jennifer Bowman, a nurse in emergency at Bowmanville Hospital. Mrs. Bowman told us of many things we can do for others at the time of an accident at home or on the roads. She also reminded us to look after ourselves as well. We were shown how to put on a sling and tensor bandage and were asked to demonstrate on a partner. Mrs. Bowman also suggested we have an emergency kit on hand at all times. Mrs. L. Kelsey thanked Mrs. Bowman and presented a gift. The repeating repeating of the Collect closed our melt and the steps were easier to. get up. Reverend Sedgwick had the prayer and responsive reading. The first lesson was from John 3: 14-21 about the light coming into the world. The choir sang an anthem. For expression expression of Worship we learned another another hymn with part of the choir and piano and flute. The children's minute minute had the children learning God loved the World so much that he. gave his only son that everyone who believes in him might not die, but have eternal life. The second lesson was from Numbers Numbers 21:4-9 about the snake made of Bronze. Alan and Helen Peacock took up the offering. Reverend Sedgwick spoke on "Chosen Darkness". Referring to 1925 when the three churches had their own specific faith joined to form our United Church. Head officials met and had the three Statements of the doctrine and creeds of the three churches of our common faith and Articles set out in order of what we believe. No rules have been changed in 69 years. He stressed light and darkness. The light has come into the world, but people love the darkness darkness rather than the light because their deeds are evil. Anyone who does evil things hates the light and will not come to the light because he does not want his evil deeds to be shown up. But whoever does what is true comes to the light in order that the light may show that what he did was in Obedience of God. Coffee was served at the close. In last weeks news I attended a 50th wedding anniversary and omitted omitted whose it was Clara and Ross Bennett Bennett relatives of Henry's. Clara was a Forsythe.. The seniors met last week but only 19 attended as most had lanes full of snow after the storm. Jackson and Susan Peacock had Mark and Linda and three boys _for the weekend. Sorry to have to report that David and Jennifer Walker had to fly home from their holiday on the weekend as Jennifer's mother has died. Howard and Vivian Quantrill and Gloria and Fred spent Sunday in London London visiting with Mary and Ray Quantrill where Mary is in the hospital. hospital. Mae Muldrew had David McIntosh McIntosh as a guest for lunch an evening last week. Ray Avery visited with Mae Muldrew on Sunday. I had dinner Saturday evening with Suzanne, Rob, Alyson, Peter and Todd, Alyson's boy friend who has been promoted at his work and we celebrated. Edna Morris celebrates her birthday birthday on Thursday and I celebrate mine on the 29th and we are the same age. June plans to come down for the weekend before my birthday.
