The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Wednesday, March 30,1994 7 Pines Senior Public School Dominates Basketball Court by Brad Kelly A new Canadian swimming record was set by a group of 11 and 12-year-olds from Markham during a NEWAC invitational meet held on Sunday at the Fitness Centre Stephanie Brueschke, Angela Sy, Carmen Barnett and Alana Madder, members of the Markham Aquatic Club, set a new Canadian record in the 11/12-year-old girls' short course 200m individual medley. Their time of 2:07.70 broke the existing record of 2:08.39, which was set in 1992. "They are a very committed group and are always willing to train," said their coach, Ian Gillis. "They will do whatever I ask of them. Occasionally, they will fail, but they will push themselves to the limit before they fail." The four girls have only been swimming together as a team since September of last year. What made Sunday's accomplishment even more dramatic was the fact that a fire alarm caused a delay of 20 minutes just prior to the start of the race. Participants were forced to clear the pool area as a safety precaution, leaving many of the swimmers crammed into the small lobby area. - "They said they : had lost their adrenalin," said Gillis of the delay. "But they quickly regained their focus, and once they did that, they got the momentum hey made a run at the Canadian record in Brantford during the provincial championships that were held in early March. Their time of 2:06.98 just missed breaking the old mark. Next in their sight is the Canadian long course record which they hope to break between April 8-10 in the University of Toronto's 50m pool at a meet hosted by Ajax.
