Clean Sweep '94 takes place in Oshawa's Second Marsh and activities activities get underway at 9 a.m. The Federation Federation of Ontario Naturalists will unveil unveil their "Shorelines" project, a series of storyboards to tour schools across the province, alerting children to the responsibilities of living on the Great Lakes. Clean Sweep gets underway when people don their wellies, or similar waterproof footwear, to pick up all litter blown into the marshes over the winter. Garbage bags and gloves are provided and if the past three years are anything to go by, the 4th annual Clean Sweep will be a popular event. While the clean up is underway, Boy Scouts and Girl Guides will plant some 1500 trees, species selected selected to create the mixed woodlot that existed on the site 200 years ago. At noon, everyone is invited back to the General Motors building where President George Peapples will serve hot dogs and goodies to the hungry crowd. Stream Angling Prize Day at Heber Heber Down Conservation Area in Whitby is a great opportunity for families to get out and do a little fishing. fishing. From 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. rainbow trout can be caught, weighed and released released back into the water. At the end of the day prizes will be handed out and visitors will have learned more about the pleasures of conservation. Heber Down Conservation Area is off Highway 12 north of Taunton Road. Tulip Festival at Cullen Gardens in Whitby is an annual extravaganza of 100,000 Dutch tulips, blooming over 26 acres. Walk among the colourful colourful blooms, take photographs, then pretend you went to Holland. COMPOSTERS ON SALE ~ Once again, the Durham Region will be offering a special price on backyard composters. You can pick up your composter at Rekker's Garden Gallery for just $15. The price is subsidized by the Ministry of the Environment and Energy. They are being made available to help promote waste reduction. On Saturday, April 9, the composters will be sold and demonstrated at Rekkers from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will also be a free composting workshop and fee composting information provided throughout the day. To date, over 27,000 Durham residents have begun composting.
