These" ticks are most active in the spring and fall, but arc present throughout the summer. They are found in secluded wooded areas, but travel widely to rural and suburban fields and yards on wildlife, dogs and humans. The disease has spread to Canada from the United States. The tick has been carried by waterfowl and other migratory birds, as well as dogs travelling travelling with their owners. In humans, the symptoms can include include a skin rash at the site of the tick bite and vague, flu-like illnesses. Some of the symptoms can show up as arthritis. The signs in pets can include include shifting lameness, arthritis, fe- vers, depression and loss of appetite. The disease can be treated, often successfully in the early stages. Once the disease has progressed, however, some of the changes cannot be reversed reversed or halted. How can you protect yourself and your pet?
