The Independent, Canadian Statesman Weekender, Bowmanville, Saturday, April 9,1994 7 On Easter Sunday, the Bowmanville Bowmanville Optimist Tyke Selects travelled to Scarborough's Stephen Leacock Arena for a date with the Cedar Hill Selects, who had defeated Bowmanville Bowmanville in a tournament back on January 16. Coach Jim Barchard pinpointed that loss as the moment when the boys started to believe in themselves, leading to a run of great hockey prior to the letdown in our own Optimist Tyke Tournament last week. So after a pre-game pep talk from the coach designed to reawaken the concept of team play and hard work, the boys played inspired hockey and defeated Cedar Hill 9-1. The team put on as fine an exhibition of passing passing as wé have seen all year, creating many scoring opportunities and enabling enabling them to outshot their opponents 30-9. Coach Barchard juggled the lineup lineup slightly for this match, moving Matt Mitchell back to his former right-wing position and placing Chris Boyce on die defense, where he has played regularly with his house league team. The move seemed to be a positive one for both players, with Chris utilizing his defensive instincts smartly and Matt adding some creativity creativity to the offence. In spite of the offensive output, the early star of the game was goalie Gord Baird, who made an outstanding outstanding breakaway save on his first shot against, which game the team a lift. Gord would make another beautiful save in the second period before giving giving way to Justin Andrews. Justin was tested on his first shot and met the challenge. Both goalies received typically strong support from defence stalwarts Andrew Fracz, Corey Oliver Oliver and Rene Cartier. There was a trio of two goal shooters .in this game, including Bryan Barchard, Stephen Comelissen and Adam Cull. Comelissen's first goal was set up by a beautiful pass from Barchard, followed by some slick stickhandling and a solid shot to the top comer. Barchard's first goal finished off an excellent rash by the captain, while his second, assisted by Daniel Michael, hit the post before being knocked in by the goalie. Cull's first goal came on one of his wicked wristshots, after Matt Mitchell had worked hard along the boards to get him the puck. Corey Oliver Oliver also drew an assist on that play. Cull's second goal was assisted by Andrew Fracz, who used his uncanny anticipatory powers to force a turnover turnover at the Cedar Hill blueline and send Adam in alone. Other goal scorers were as follows: follows: Rene Cartier on a fine solo rush while the team was shorthanded; Mike Richardson on a breakaway; and Daniel Michael, to finish off a neat passing play with Richardson. And although their efforts were not reflected on the scoresheet, Adam Cryderman and Mathew Best created many scoring chances with their diligent diligent play. All in all, it was most encouraging to see our B.R.H.L. Tyke Selects regroup regroup after a couple of disappointing losses and play smart hockey. Credit must also go to the coaches for instilling instilling a positive outlook in the minds of the players. This bodes well for the last major tournament of the year, which will take place in Buffalo on the weekend of April 15th. Good luck guys!
