Player Knocks Down Referee During Playoff Game by Brad Kelly When Jim Veltman looks back on the past couple of years of his illustrious lacrosse career, he will be able recount how he played in a handful of championship games. And should his Buffalo Bandits team come up with one more victory, he will have a championship ring on all four fingers and the thumb of one hand to prove it. The phys-ed teacher at Durham Christian High School will go in search of his fifth consecutive major lacrosse title on Saturday afternoon. Veltman will lead his Buffalo team against the Philadelphia Wings in the championship final of the Major Indoor Lacrosse Buffalo are the two-time defending champions of the league, having beaten Philadelphia in last year's final by a 13-12 score. Saturday's game will mark the third time in a row that these two teams have met in the finals. Two years ago, Buffalo won their first championship, 11-10 in sudden-death overtime. In addition to those two championships, Veltman has also won back-to-back Mann Cup titles, the top prize in Canadian Senior lacrosse, with his Brampton Excelsiors. Buffalo advanced to Saturday's final with a 16-10 victory over Detroit this past weekend. In the other semi-final, Philadelphia eliminated New York by a 17-7 count. In Buffalo's semi-final, the game was close until an ugly Incident involving one of the Detroit players changed the momentum in Buffalo's favour. A Detroit player went ballistic towards the referee after a penalty was called against one of his teammates. "I was on the floor at the time and saw a bit of a crowd gathered," said Veltman of what transpired. "One player from Detroit was arguing the call, and the rest of the players were trying to settle him down. "The next thing I knew, the guy just snapped." The Detroit player charged the referee, knocking him down to the floor. "I've never seen anything like that before," said Veltman, a Bowmanville resident. The outburst put Buffalo on an extended power play in which they scored twice, breaking a 6- "That seemed to be the turning point," Veltman recalled. "The game Was real close until then, and we just blew it open after that." Detroit scored three times in the last two minutes of the game to make the score a little more respectable. Both Buffalo and Philadelphia finished first overall in their respective divisions during the regular season. In their two encounters earlier this year, each team recorded a four-goal victory over the other. With the last two championship games between these teams decided by only one goal, Saturday afternoon's final should be another dandy. "They are going to be tough," predicted Veltman. "They have the offensive power that we have, and their defence is led by a great goalie." En-Pro Toros End Season With Losses to Newmarket Tuesday night's game for the En- Pro Toros in Newmarket was a hard fought battle ending in a 2-0 win for Newmarket. Strong goaltending kept the Toros off the score sheet as they outplayed the Newmarket team. Wednesday night's game was a different story as Matt Akey finally found a weakness in the armour of Newmarket's goaltending, scoring two goals with Steve Eweles, Joel Osborne and Andy Griffin picking up the assists.
