Decks have become the nationwide center for entertaining and outdoor family living; and porches are making a strong comeback. But in most parts of the country biting insects often limit the use of both porches and decks, particularly after dark. An easily constructed screened enclosure offers an economical solution to the problem. Enclosing your porch or deck with easy-to-install aluminum or Fiber glass screening extends your living space outdoors at minimum cost. You'll have an outdoor living room that's light and airy by day, and lets in pleasant evening breezes without annoying flying insects. Housekeeping is easier, too. A Increase in Number Of Home Computers Calls for Instal ation Of Surge Protectors Many homeowners have endured the headaches caused by power failures. Unfortunately, a subtle yet more frequent phenomenon can damage or destroy your home's electronic equipment and computers. Today's sophisticated electronic products rely on microprocessors that require clean; stable power to operate properly. Sudden, momentary increases in voltage and current called power surges can cause immediate damage or gradual deterioration of these components. Power surges can strike televisions and VCRs, personal computers, household appliances, telephone answering machines and workshop tools. The average home experiences up to 2,000 power surges per year. Power surges are caused by a wide variety of factors ranging from lightning strikes to home appliance motors turning on and off. They are transmitted not only through electrical connections, but also over telephone lines. Even if a power surge isn't strong enough to knock out your electronic equipment, it can strain the circuitry and shorten the unit's life. "One of the best ways to safeguard electronic equipment from power surges is to use a surge protector," says Mike Einstein of Intermatic Inc., a manufacturer of home protection and control products. A surge protector continuously monitors the incoming power line, operating only when a surge occurs. It responds immediately by dissipating the surge and permitting normal voltage to flow through the line. After the power surge passes, the device automatically resets itself. Surge protectors range in size from simple one-outlet units designed to protect a single piece of equipment on up to complete packages for an entire home. Some models feature built-in protection for electronic phone systems, fax machines and modems. screened enclosure keeps out windblown windblown leaves and debris all year round. And since the screening reduces ultraviolet transmission, there's less fading of furniture and fabrics. Aluminum and fiber glass screening is available in rolls in both conventional and solar weaves at hardware, home center and building supply stores. Solar screening blocks about 70 percent of the sun's rays, and can be used where you want protection from the sun. If you're enclosing a porch, insect screening can be installed with simple framing. For a deck, you'll probably want to construct a permanent roof so that wet weather doesn't drive you indoors. Mulches can be very beneficial to your home vegetable garden. The questions then may be, What should I use for mulch? Is one material superior to the other? What are some of the benefits of mulches? Mulches can prevent weed growth and soil erosion. A thick mulch can prevent seed germination and weeding chores. Also, if the garden is on a slope, a properly applied mulch can reduce soil erosion. This prevents the loss of your best soil. One of the major benefits of mulches is the conservation of soil moisture. Mulches help keep a more uniform supply of water available to your vegetables. This can be quite important if you encounter a disease, such as blossom-end rot of tomato, which is favored by fluctuating soil moisture levels. Additionally, many diseases are soil-borne, that is, they survive the winter in the soil. Early blight of tomatoes is caused by a fungus that survives in the soil. The fungus is then splashed by rain onto the lower leaves of the following years crops. Mulching your tomatoes can reduce or delay the movement of the early blight fungus from the soil to the leaves of the tomato plants, thus reducing the application of fungicides. Mulches allow you to work in your garden sooner after heavy periods of rain. By applying mulches you can keep fruits such as beans, strawberries, tomatoes, cantaloupes, etc. from laying on the soil where they're often invaded by soil fungi which infest and rot them. Mulches can be a good way to recycle organic matter, and at the same time, improve your garden soil. Materials such as shredded bark, sawdust, grain straw, hay, pine needles and paper can be used as mulches and eventually incorporated into the soils. Some plastic mulches are now available in a biodegradable form. They begin to deteriorate late in the season and can be tilled into the soil where degradation is complete. The proper use of mulch will help you have a more productive garden and at the same time, maintain a better environment LAWYER Peter E. Heslin, LL.B.
