24 The Independent, Canadian Statesman Weekender, Bowmanville, Saturday, April 16,1994 Be Cautious When Pruning Tree Tops If you've been thinking about having trees in your yard topped to prevent limbs from crashing into your house or to correct a poor shape, don't pick up the telephone yet "Topping trees to prevent problems may create the problems you're trying to avoid," said George Hopper, a forester with the Agricultural Extension Service. Homeowners often top trees to prevent limb breakage, house damage, tree diseases or to correct poor shape of the tree. Here's the problem. "Topped branches can't form a callus layer (natural healing layer), so they die back to the next largest branch," Hopper said. "Meanwhile, this dying and rotting branch becomes infected with tree heart rot disease, which can penetrate to the base of the tree and kill it." The forester said, "A better solution to topping a tree is to prune the tree early during the tree's life. Proper pruning shapes a tree as it grows and thus maintains a healthy, vigorous tree." Prune a tree during the donnant season from November through February. "To reduce the height, use the 'drop crouch-target' pruning method," Hopper said. "In this method, you 'drop back' to the next largest branch or trunk and pmne at the branch 'crouch.'" Cut branches at an angle. Since it's easier to cause longterm longterm damage when pruning shade trees than when pruning shrubs and fruit trees, you may want to contact 123 King Street E.,| Bowmanville FRANK REALTOR W. After pruning the tree, don't paint the wound," Hopper said. "Research has shown that wound dressings don't help the natural closure of the wound. Healthy trees close the wounds within a few years." AVOIDING MORTGAGE DEFAULT Due to the difficult economic times that we have been experiencing in the last few years, a large number of homeowners are being faced with the possibility of "losing their homes to the bank" due to the inability to keep up mortgage payments. If you're in this position, or foresee it in the near future, DON'T WAIT FOR YOUR MORTGAGE LENDER TO TAKE LEGAL ACTION!! Request an interview with your Mortgagee and go in immediately and discuss your situation. If your financial problems can be solved without going into default, your lending institution will take the initiative to assist you to find a solution. If a default situation becomes unavoidable after all practical alternatives have been explored, then a Mortgagee, as a last resort, will have to proceed with legal action. One of the most commonly utilized avenues for collection of monies owed under a mortgage is the "Power of Sale" process, (see next week's column) You could be the owner of a 1994 Grand Am SE by buying or selling through me this year.
