Features and Comments, Wednesday, April 20,1994 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville 15 Seat Belt Awareness Campaign Takes Aim at Stubborn Drivers Ontario's spring seat belt campaign campaign which began Saturday, April 16, is targeting the province's one million drivers and passengers who still don't buckle up despite overwhelming overwhelming evidence that seat belts save lives. "We are determined to make our roads the safest in North America and reduce the $9 billion annual cost of collisions," said Transportation Minister Gilles Pouliot. "To reach our goal we have to convince all road users to wear their seat belts each and every time they get in their vehicle." Ministry statistics show typical drivers who refuse to buckle up are younger males, people who drive old vehicles, people who drive frequently, frequently, and drivers who have had other convictions or collisions. "It's hard to imagine there are that many people ' willing to endanger themselves - willing to take risks on the road," said Pouliot. This spring's campaign runs until April 30th. Throughout the campaign, campaign, police forces across the province province will help raise public awareness by stepping up enforcement. Drivers who do not buckle up will receive two demerit points against their driving record as well as a $90 fine. "The introduction of demerit points is designed to provide further deterrent for those hard-core nonusers nonusers who aren't motivated to buckle up by safety concerns," Pouliot said. Ontario's seat belt usage of 84 per cent is below the national average of 88 per cent. In Newfoundland, Saskatchewan Saskatchewan and Quebec, where demerit demerit points are levied against drivers convicted of not wearing a seat belt, the average usage rate has reached 95 per cent. The province is hoping for similar results.
