Gilbank The death of Thelma Ernestine Gilbank aged 75, occurred on Wednesday, February 2, 1994 at Markham-Stouffville Hospital, Markham, Markham, following a brief illness. Daughter of the late Hairy G. Freeman and Lola May Snowden, she was bom in Maple Grove and educated educated at Maple Grove Public School, Bowmanville High School, and Peterborough Teachers College. She was married July 17, 1945, to the late Ernest L. Gilbank. A résident of the Shaw's area, and then on a farm north of Orono, Thelma resided in Orono for the past 21 years after Ernie's death. Thelma retired in June 1980 after 28 years teaching at Devitts, Pickering Pickering Beach, Burketon, Browns, Mitchell's Mitchell's Comers, Hampton, Shaws, and Vincent Massey Schools, serving both as Principal and teacher. She enjoyed enjoyed travelling all over the world. She was an active member of Orono Orono United Church for approximately 38 years and served in many capacities capacities including Sunday School Teacher, Teacher, Superintendent of Sunday School, Member of Session, Clerk of Session, Member of U.C.W., President of Orono U.C.W., Stewards Committee, Manse Committee, and Choir Member. Member. Thelma was recently honoured for her volunteer work by the Mayor of Newcastle. She was active with Clar- ington Community Care, Blood Donor Donor Clinics, Cancer Society, Heart Fund, Foot Clinic, Women's Institute - Shaw's, Retired Women Teachers Federation and Orono Fair. Her life demonstrated her untiring contributions contributions to people and organizations and her zest for living life to the fullest. She was a loving mother and grandmother to 17 grandchildren to Anne Nagarajan, Connellsville Pa., Carol and Paul Webb, of Markham, Donna and Alan McAlpine, of Frank- ford, Bill and Mary Gilbank of Pon- typool, Dave and Eydie Gilbank, of Pontypool. Also survived by sisters Mrs. Morley Flintoff (Lyra) Bowmanville Bowmanville and Mrs. Ross Allin (Marion) (Marion) of Newcastle. She enjoyed her family and was very proud of all her grandchildren. Many friends paid their respects at Morris' Funeral Home, Bowmanville Bowmanville with the funeral service held at Orono United Church on Saturday. The service was conducted by Reverend Reverend M. Russell. Music was supplied by organist Stella Morton and soloists soloists Delphine Nagarajan and Ross Metcalf, with readings done by Mark Nagarajan and Grant Yeo. It was obvious obvious by the overwhelming attendance attendance at the funeral service that Thelma Thelma was held in high regard by all who knew her. Pallbearers were nephews Bob Gilbank, Winston Clarke, Roland Gilbank, Ross Prout, Wayne Pickard, Grant Flintoff, and Gordon Allin. Donations Donations were accepted by Orono United Church, Clarington Community Community Care and the Cancer Society in her memory and many beautiful floral floral tributes were received. Interment Orono Cemetery. Kenneth G. Hooper The death of Kenneth G. Hooper, aged 68, occurred on Wednesday, March 30, 1994, in Memorial Hospital, Hospital, Bowmanville. He had been ill eight months. Bom and educated in Bowmanville, Bowmanville, he was the son of the late Victor Victor Roy and Mary J. Hooper. He was married May 25, 1956, to Florence Allin. He had resided at 140 Ontario Street, Bowmanville for 34 years and had previously resided at 4 Carlisle Avenue, Bowmanville. An employee of Goodyear from 1946-1980, he had served 16 years as the Rubber Workers Union President Local 189. A municipal politician he had served on the Bowmanville Council in the mid 60's, the Town of Newcastle Newcastle council and the Municipality of Clarington. For the last six years he had served as a regional councillor. During World War II he served with the Royal Canadian Air Force from August 24, 1943 - September 24, 1945. He was a member of St. Paul's United Church, Bowmanville. Left to mourn his passing are his wife Florence, children Sandra and husband John McMillan, Barry and wife Debbie, Pauline and husband Dave Howarth, and Carol Hooper, seven grandchildren, sisters Gertmde BETHESDA HOUSE CURRENTLY HAS AN OPENING ON ITS VOLUNTEER BOARD OF DIRECTORS. Dorothy Agnes Lewis Following a lengthy illness, Dorothy Dorothy Agnes Lewis aged 86, died at Strathaven Lifecare Centre, Bowmanville, Bowmanville, on Tuesday, April 12, 1994. Bom in Blanshard Twsp., she was the daughter of Samuel and Mima Switzer. Educated at St. Mary's Collegiate Collegiate Institute for high school, and at Strathford Normal School, she was married in 1932 to Kenneth Lewis. A resident of Strathaven Lifecare Centre for five and a half years, she had taught school at Highland Grove, Bancroft. She previously built, owned and operated the summer resort resort Forest View Lodge which was sold in 1970. She also built, owned and operated a sawmill and farmed. On retirement she spent the winters in Florida and in the summer at Baptiste Baptiste Lake. She was a member of the United Church and a member of the Bancroft Bancroft Lioness Club, active in municipal municipal affairs, the tourist association and a willing volunteer for Highland Grove community needs. She was a great cook for lumber crews and the lodge and always set a bountiful table for everyone. Surviving are her son Maurice and wife Gail, daughter Joyce and husband husband Ray McColl, five grandchildren, grandchildren, brother Clarence Switzer and a sister Althea May. The Reverend Nancy Knox officiated officiated at the funeral services held Thursday at the Morris Funeral Chapel, Chapel, Bowmanville. The music included prelude and closing processional hymns. Honorary pallbearers were grandsons grandsons George Lewis and Brent McColl and Granville Sgareglia, Gerald May, Lloyd Peel, Ralph and Alvin Switzer.
