Optimist Club Tyke Selects From page 10 ing morning, however, the boys were up and ready to face their final opponent opponent of the year, the Welland Tigers. In this, their final game, the B.R.H.L. Optimist Tyke Selects played like the team that had won 24 games before this one. They skated well, forechecked and moved the puck, and earned the full five points available to the victor. Stephen Comelissen opened the scoring in the first period, assisted by Mathew Best and Michael Richardson. Richardson. Comelissen. and Best drew assists assists on the next goal, a power-play effort by Bryan Barchard. Welland countered with one goal before the end of the period. Steve Comelissen, playing a very strong game, scored the only goal of the second period, completing a clever passing play with linemates Michael Richardson and Adam Cull. This gave Bowmanville a 3-1 lead heading into the third period. period. Then, early in the third period, Welland scored to narrow the gap to 3-2. Déjà vu? Not today thank you. Bowmanville turned up the heat and scored three more times in rapid succession succession to tame those Tigers for good. Bryan Barchard scored his second second of the game, assisted by Rene Cartier and Stephen Comelissen (his fourth point of the game). Daniel Michael Michael was rewarded for a fine tournament tournament with a goal, assisted by Andrew Fracz. Andrew then set up Adam Cryderman for the sixth Bowmanville Bowmanville goal. Welland added a third goal late in the game, and the game ended 6 to 3 for Bowmanville, who outshot Welland Welland 21 to 6. Mike Richardson was selected MVP by the Welland coaches. coaches. Following the game, Rod Cartier, speaking on behalf of the players and parents, presented each ofour dedicated dedicated coaches, Jim Barchard, Steve Richardson and Rob Cull, with hockey hockey sticks autographed by all the players. Gifts were also presented to the team's hardworking Manager- Joanne Barchard, and the team statistician statistician and press correspondent, Jeff Mitchell. Coach Barchard closed things off with a short speech thanking thanking the boys for a great year and expressing expressing the hope that the boys learned a few things about the game of hockey. On behalf of all the parents, parents, this writer can assure the coach that the boys did indeed learn a lot, though I'm sure that such assurance is unnecessary. When the B.R.H.L. Optimist Tyke Selects came together in October, the potential of the team was unclear. As the year progressed, one could see a ' cohesive unit taking shape as the coaches worked on team concepts. The players found that they could compete with teams that appeared to have more skilled individuals. The team won 25 games, including three tournaments. There were also 10 losses, and a few disappointments to balance the successes and keep things in perspective. The result, then, is more than the • statistics listed below, for at an early age these youngsters have learned that success comes with hard-work, co-operation and commitment. CFLRI: The Researchers in Active Living It costs $67 billion a year to run the Canadian health care system, and costs are forever increasing. We can no longer afford that. Some take the grim view of advocating cuts in services. We fake a more uplifting view and advocate healthier lifestyles. If our society was healthier, it would not depend as much on the health care system. Of course, some diseases are hereditary and cannot be circumvented. However, our lifestyles are well under our control and we can do something about them. alone every year since then. That adds up to more than $9 billion over 12 years. Add to that the costs of all other aches and diseases that could have been preventéd by regular physical activity. Then include all the other costs incurred in addition to treatment treatment costs (absenteeism, for example). Still not enough? Consider two other lifestyle habits that can be modified: smoking and indulging in high-fat diets. Add the savings front changing these habits as well and... the numbers can be staggering indeed!
