LOCAL HISTORIAN SIGNS BOOK AT MUSEUM - On Thursday, Thursday, May 5, you're invited to meet the author of a new book about Bowmanville's history at the Bowmanville Bowmanville Museum. George F. Vice, a former Postmaster of Bowmanville, Bowmanville, has written a book entitled "The Post Office and Early Development Development in Bowmanville. This book not only gives an informative account account of postal history in our area, but also relates the history of local postal service to the general heritage of the area. The book-signing is from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. on May 5. There will be free admission and refreshments refreshments will be served. The sale of this book is a museum fundraising fundraising project. BREAST CARE SEMINAR - Due to the excellent response to the first Breast Care Seminar, Memorial Hospital is once again holding a special information program about breast care and self-examination. Women are invited to attend this seminar where speakers will talk about mammography, diet, self- examination, treatments and doctors' doctors' examinations. The presentation will take place in an easy-to- understand style. The seminar is free. However, advance registration is required. COMPOSTING WORKSHOP - A spring composter sale will take place Saturday, April 30, at Newcastle Lumber. Durham residents are invited to Newcastle Lumber on that date to purchase a composter for just $15. They're subsidized through the Ministry of the Environment and Energy and are made available through the Region of Durham's Waste Reduction Programs. Regional staff will be on site all day, offering free information and presenting the workshops. You don't even have to buy a composter to join the workshops or pick up information. If you already own a composter, why not take this opportunity to become a two-composter family? The program runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Newcastle Lumber is on Highway Two, east of Mill St. ECUMENICAL DINNER APRIL 26 - The annual ladies' pot luck ecumenical dinner is set for Tuesday, April 26. Come one! Come all! Heart Fund Campaign Beats Objective and Raises Over $17,000 February's Person-to-Person Campaign for the Heart and Stroke Foundation was the most successful ever. The fund-raisers exceeded their objective by $3,000, bringing bringing in a total of $17,795.75. A very special thank-you goes to Bowmanville's treasurer, Nancy MacMaster and her helper, Dianne Gareau. Without their dedication, the Heart and Stroke Foundation's campaign would not have been so successful. Thanks also go to all the door- to-door canvassers and captains who braved the coldest February in history to raise money to continue continue the fight against Canada's Number One killer. In honor of this year's success, there will be a celebration in Bowmanville on Wednesday, Apriul 27, at 7 p.m. at Trinity UnitedChurch. NURSERY SCHOOL REGISTRATION - There will be a registration and open house at the Small Miracles Nursery School in the Newcastle Village Community Hall this month. PORT DARLINGTON COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION - David Crome, Manager of Strategic Planning for the Municipality of Clarington, will be the guest speaker at the next meeting of the Port Darlington Community Association. The meeting is on Monday, April 25, at die Port Darlington Marina Hotel. It begins at eight p.m. Mr. Crome will speak on the topic of policies pertaining to the municipal waterfront. A recent set of guidelines being considered by Clarington council call for the waterfront to include a greenway for walking and cycling and for public access. LEARNING DISABILITIES ASSOCIATION -- There will be a meeting of the Learning Disabilities Association on April 28 at Grandview Rehabilitation and Treatment Centre. The speaker is a teacher with the Northumberland/Clarington Board of Education. The topic of discussion will be spelling and math, along with details concerning how these subjects are taught in today's schools. The week co-incides with the 75th anniversary of the Canadian Mental Health Association. The purpose of Mental Health Week is to alert citizens about the importance of emotional well-being and the make the public aware of issues connected with mental health in our community. ADVANCED PHOTO WORKSHOP - The Durham College Continuous learning Division is offering a new workshop in advanced photography. It will teach you how to develop a photographic portfolio and also to work independently on projects. This workshop mns Saturdays, from April 30 to July 16 at the Oshawa Campus.
