The fishway also provides an opportunity opportunity for MNR staff to assess the rainbow population, its numbers, growth rate of returning fish and to collect tissue samples for analysis for a wide variety of contaminants that may have been picked up in their two or three years in Lake Ontario. In the fishway's first year, 500 trout went through the structure. By 1993 this number had grown to 9000, although this number is less than the peak reached in 1989. With the help of an electronic counter, purchased by the Ganaraska Sportsmen's Association, the exact number of fish passing through the fishway can be determined. determined. ^ Phone Brad Kelly at 623-3303 j FREE FAMILY SWIM -- Newcastle Block Parents are inviting families to join them at the Bowmanville swimming pool for a free hour of swimming on Saturday, May 14, from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The first 190 people will be admitted on a first-come, first-served basis. Barry Snider, Area Biologist Along much of the Lake Ontario shoreline of Northumberland County, a true sign of spring is the large rainbow rainbow trout migrating up the numerous eoldwater streams out of Lake Ontario Ontario in order to spawn. The trout averaging averaging 3 kg, with some as large as 5 kg, migrate upstream when the warm sunny days of spring raise the stream temperatures. The rainbow will be adorned in their attractive spawning colours with the males having a slash of red down their entire sides and females females having less distinctive red markings. At other times of the year these fish arc silver-sided. The males arc further distinguished by a newly- formed hooked jaw. It is the sheer determination determination to reproduce which causes causes the fish to swim against the fast running spring waters to return to the gravel spawning beds that they hatched from 4 to 5 years before. One of the best places to watch this spring phenomenon is Corbett's Dam on the Ganaraska River. Corbett's Corbett's Dam is just a stone's throw away from the south side of Hwy. 401 in Port Hope and can be reached by taking the first right turn off Hwy. 28, south of Hwy. 401. The rainbow migrate up the Ganaraska River and group below Corbett's Dam. Before 1974, the trout were unable to navigate navigate past this 12 foot dam and were helped by the installation of the fishway. fishway. It is the Rainbow trout's initial two-foot jump in the fishway which gives visitors an exciting look at this spring ritual. Arnie O'Donnell, now retired from the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR), looked after the fishway for many years. Due to the popularity of this fish viewing area, Legion Dart League Champs Receive Awards In addition, Durham was one of the "A" finalists in the BRHL tournament tournament during March break, losing 5-3 to Rotary in the championship game. Awards for Members of Maple Leaf Judo Club The rainbow trout are not native to the Ganaraska River, Lake Ontario or indeed to this side of the continent. The rainbow trout is actually a native of the Pacific Ocean. The rainbow trout arc in a group of fish that includes includes all of the salmon and trout species. It is closely related to the Atlantic Atlantic Salmon (the north Atlantic salmon). salmon). Throughout history, the Ganaraska Ganaraska River has been recognized for its outstanding fishery. In fact, Ganaraska Ganaraska is an Iroquois name meaning "the place of the spawning fish". In the 1700's the river was a famous Atlantic Atlantic Salmon stream. With the construction construction of numerous millpond dams however, the Atlantic Salmon's path to their spawning beds was blocked. Over fishing, siltation of spawning beds and the dams eventually led to the collapse of the Atlantic Salmon. With the destruction of some of the dams and the reforestration of the Ganaraska headwaters, the quality of the Ganaraska River spawning beds has dramatically improved. Consequently, Consequently, the introduction of rainbow trout into the Ganaraska River in the 1970's has led to a flourishing fishery fishery as the river provides an excellent habitat. Amie O'Donnell has seen over 300 spring time anglers at one below the C.N.R. bridge enjoying the rainbow rainbow trout fishery. Remember that fishing is not allowed in the vicinity of Corbett's Dam. Anglers should also be aware of where they step in the stream at this time of year as they may be walking on gravel spawning beds, home to thousands of fragile rainbow eggs. Come out to the Ganaraska River and admire one of nature's spectacular spectacular shows. For more information contact: Transplanted Turkey, Doug Johnston, Johnston, Resource Technician.
