35 YEARS AGO -- Congratulations to the Bowmanville Rotary Club's bowling team of Dr. H.B. Bundle, Dr. K. Slemon, Messrs. Walt De Greer, Bill Steven, Mel Dale, A1 Witherspoon, and Morley Vanstone on winning the Rotary District Championship. ******* 25 YEARS AGO -- During the Men's Major League bowling banquet banquet at Memorial Park, many trophy and award presentations were made. The team winning the John M. James trophy for being the champions were: Luke Annaert, Jack Parker, Bud Henning, Ray Van Meer, Russ Hallman, Morley Oke. ******* It appears that this year's edition of the Intermediate baseball club, sponsored by Harry Locke TV, has a good chance of going all the way and winning the Ontario championship. Pitchers Ralph Kennedy and Gary Akey are back, along with fire-baller Guy Parks and another another hard thrower, Terry Carleton. Returnees include first sacker Leo Kelly, catcher Larry Piper, playing coach George Sainsbury, Vem Grubiri, Vince Vanstone, centre fielder Grant Wright, Ray Crombie and George Jones, both outfielders. It would seem Terry Black has the inside track on third base, with Stevef Burns likely to hold down the second base position. Look for Don McMurter, "Archie" Crossey, and Ron Smith to bolster the outfield. Manager Clint Ferguson is going to have a tough time deciding on his starting lineup. ******* 20 YEARS AGO -- Top teams in the Friday Night Mixed Bowling League consists of Bill Luxton, Gerry Dickens, Helen Piper, Lyle Millson, Gold Wilcox, Peg Millson. 10 YEARS AGO - The Bowmanville Golf Club hosted its annual Men's Opening tournament, with more than 80 golfers taking part. Every sport has an event which symbolizes the greatness of the game. In football, it is, of course, the Super Bowl; in golf, the Masters; baseball climaxes with the World Series; and hockey brings the best to light in a competition for the Stanley Stanley Cup. In the world of standardbred athletes, athletes, the great event for trotting horses is undoubtedly the Hambletonian. Hambletonian. The race is only for the best three-year-old trotters, and was named after the immortal trotter, Hambletonian, whose blood flows through every standardbred today. The purists in the sport of harness harness racing claim the trotter as the ideal and the win of all wins. The most-sought-after trophy is the silver silver from the Hambletonian, and the lions share of the $1 million purse. This year, on August 6, in East Rutherford, New Jersey, at the fa-' mous Meadowlands track, two Canadian Canadian equine athletes will be numbered numbered among the best. Westgate Crown, bred and still partially owned by two brothers, John and Paul Simmonds of North York and Pickering, will be one of the Canuck contenders. This colt took the trotting scene by storm in 1993, winning seven of eight starts, and setting new standards standards for his age and gait His bank balance at the end of the season totaled totaled an outstanding and enviable $766,626. There could, however, be a spoiler spoiler in the pack that day, and his name says it all - Incredible Abe. This time the Canadian ownership lies in the province of Quebec. This colt made his name and 1993 wages of $279,847 in the state of New York. He faced the competition 15 times as a two-year-old, and marched first, across the finish line in 11 of those outings. It is not unusual to see Canadian talent shine in the sport of harness racing, as many of the sport's past and present stars have originated on this side of the border. Harness Racing Schedule for Kawartha Downs Harness racing at Kawartha Downs has moved into its twice weekly schedule, with races being held every Thursday and Saturday.
