Community's Role in Child Rearing From Page One The premier's task force outlined a comprehensive approach which begins even before birth, with an emphasis on healthy mothers and healthy pregnancies. It continues all the way to late adolescence, with the suggestion that youth become move involved in community involvement, volunteer work and citizenship skills. Such projects would also give young people the sort of real-life experience that many feel is lacking in the current educational field. While the initiatives from the task force are sometimes described as being new, they are really part of an age-old process whereby the care of children is the responsibility of a caring community. It is important, however, that we sit down and decide how the community should act to achieve this objective. . There are those who might suggest that a shift in emphasis to the community will encourage parents to neglect their responsibilities. Why should parents look after kids if there's a whole brigade of social service and volunteer agencies to do it for them, we might ask? But, it is more likely that the reverse will be true. If the community, as a whole, takes more interest in the healthy development of kids, then parents will be encouraged to take their role more seriously. And, while the community's interest in the well-being of children makes sense from an altruistic point of view, there is also a practical side to this altruism. Kids who are able to grow up as productive, well-adjusted citizens will not cost society extra expenses related to such things as law enforcèment, crime prevention, or drug rehabilitation. Dr. Dan Offord, a co-chair of the Children and Youth Project, made this observation in a news release last week: "Many of today's parents have less time, less help, and fewer resources for raising their children than our parents did. This means our childen can be shortchanged in a clash of socio-economic demands. We believe Ontario is well positioned to take concrete action to ensure the healthy development of our children's future." Hi! I'm Brendan Tink and I'm celebrating celebrating my first birthday.
