Director Brian Levant (Beethoven) (Beethoven) helms the zaniest rock 'n* rollercoaster comedy to come along since the Ice Age. It opens at the Bowmanville Cinema this week-end Bruce Cohen is the producer, with Colin Wilson as co-producer and William Hanna, Joseph Barbera, Kathleen Kennedy, David Kirschner and Gerald R. Molen as executive producers. The screenplay is written by Tom S. Parker and Jim Jennewein and Steven E. de Souza. Steven Spielberg's production company, Amblin Entertainment, had visions of a live-action feature version version of The Flintstones for many years, and began working with Universal Universal and Hanna/Barbera to develop the project. From the beginning, recalls recalls producer Brace Cohen, "Steven made it clear that we were only going to make this movie if we had John Goodman to play Fred." Between the demanding process of script developXS^» ment and Goodman's commitments to Roseanne, and other feature projects, projects, it was not until the summer of 1993 that cameras were ready to roll at last with director Brian Levant at the helm. For several years, Levant, who had built a reputation as one of television's television's finest comedy writer/producer/ directors with such shows as Happy Days, Mork and Mindy and The New Leave It To Beaver, had actively followed followed news of The Flintstones project. project. As an avid fan of the show who has assembled an impressive array of Flintstones memorabilia over the years, Levant hoped to land the assignment assignment to write the screenplay. In the meantime, he directed his second feature film, Beethoven, which went on to gross more than $143 million worldwide. Soon after, he approached Amblin once again, still hoping to get a chance to write the script. Levant was informed that they had already made the writing assignments assignments for the film, but would he be interested in meeting Spielberg and executive producer Kathleen Kennedy to discuss directing? Levant was thrilled. Recalling his meeting with Spcilberg and Kennedy, he says, "I tried to convey to them how much I felt for the original scries, how much I thought I had to offer them in terms of bringing it to the big screen. Life changes for Fred and Wilma when a promotion lands Fred in the executive suite at the Slate quarry. The Flintstones occupies an interesting interesting place in my heart and in my life. I thought that I should be the one to translate that affection to the screen because what I am is a fan of The F lints toms." With Levant on board as director, the filmmakers' mutual goal was to bring The Flintstones to life in all their prehistoric finery, creating a movie that would be faithful to the tone and spirit of the original series. "When people come to see an entertainment entertainment based on another, earlier entertainment entertainment that they have affection for, there are things about it that people people want to see," says Levant. "They want to hear Fred yell 'Yabba- Dabba-Doo!" They want to hear Wilma Wilma and Betty say 'Charge It!' They want to hear Dino bark 'Yip, Yip, Yip, Yip, Yip' and knock Fred down and lick him silly. And we've done those things because we love them, too." The audience wants to hear Fred yell "Yabba-Dabba-Doo!" lion lands Fred in the executive suite at the Slate and Co. quarry. While the Flintstones taste the lifestyle of the rich and prehistoric, the Rubbles, with their newly adopted son, Bamm- Bamm, are not so fortunate and tensions tensions arise between these best of friends. "It's classic comedy entertainment," entertainment," says the director. "Casting was the most fun," producer producer Bruce Cohen recalls, "because we found people who defined their characters, people who were bom to play these parts." "Being able to say 'Yabba-Dabba- Doo' does not ensure that people will believe it's Fred Flintstonc," Levant continues. "John fleshed out the character, character, made you believe him, made you love him, made you want to forgive forgive him as you always did in The Flintstones." How do you create the character of Dino (not to mention the hundreds of other dinosaurs living in Bedrock)? And what does a prehistoric toothbrush toothbrush look like? "It's all here," he assures, "We took the basics - the two families, the kids, Dino and what would be a typical typical Flinlslone plot - then we embellished embellished it, put a modem spin on the humour." "We did our best to recreate the signature moments," promises Levant, Levant, "but we go beyond that." "There is something of The Flintstones Flintstones in all of us," says Cohen. "They represent the traditional American American couple who believe in family and want to better themselves so they can make a nicer life for themselves, their friends and their children. We took that as our background and created from that our conflict-which is that Fred is lured by the trappings of success."
