At first it was thought to be an escapee from the local zoo as the low-level roar could be heard down the street. But, upon closer inspection, we discovered the sound was not from a lion but from the newest piece of equipment the Municipality of Clarington has purchased. purchased. The litter-picker-upper cost the municipality $35,000 with all the taxes included and "has increased our productivity," said Public .Works Director Walter Evans. fT Tasty Recipes to Tantalize Your Tastebuds As summer is finally here, bikini season is in full swing and backyard barbecues abound, many of us will be glad to know how to get rid of the fat in our lives. In her new book, Get The Fat Out (Crown Trade Paperbacks), author Victoria Moran gives 501 simple simple ways to get the fat out -- out of your kitchen, out of your breakfast, out ;of your salads, soups, sauces, snacks, entrees, desserts, body -- out of your life! This book offers useful suggestions ■for shopping, setting up a low-fat kitchen, cooking with little or no fat,. and finding low-fat food at a variety of restaurants. Included are recommendations recommendations for a low-fat lifestyle --exercise, attitude and practical considerations for social (i.e. barbecues, clam bakes, pool parties) and family meals. These tips can be used by people who want to cut fat entirely, <hose who want to make only minor changes and those on special diets -- vegetarian, macrobiotic, Pritikin and others. Moran's suggestions are designed to motivate everyone to change die way they eat -- these tips are clever, simple, simple, painless and will make you wonder, wonder, "Why didn't somebody tell me this a long time ago?" Here are just a few to get you started: GET THE FAT OUT OF YOUR KITCHEN • Develop fear of frying: Frying makes any food a fatty food, and heating heating oils to the smoking point is believed to cause rampant free-radical production. In addition, there is evidence evidence that cancer-causing chemicals form when food is charred. • Water-sautéing: The more technical technical term for this is steeping. Heat the water first unless you're doing onions, which get tender faster when started in cold water. Make a water-sautéing zingier by adding the juice of a lime and some soy sauce. Experiment with die following oil-free saute liquids and discover your favorites: vegetable brodi, tomato juice, lemon juice, vinegar, vinegar, sherry, white wine, Worcestershire sauce, barbecue sauce, fruit juice, etc. GETTING THE FAT OUT OF BREADS AND BREAKFAST • Spread your bread with all-fruit jams, conserves, honey, nonfat yogurt or real Vermont maple syrup. • Add excitement to boxed cereal: Mix cereal with nonfat or soy yogurt, and add fresh fruit if desired. GET THE FAT OUT OF SALADS • Croutons crunch because they're fried in butter or oil. Instead do a crouton crouton substitute. Mix 2 cups of whole wheat bread emmbs and 1 tablespoon of namral soÿ sauce and 1 teaspoon of garlic powder. Bake on a cookie sheet at 350 degrees until brown, stirring occasionally. • Rub a cut garlic clove on your wooden salad bowl to impart an unmistakable but never overpowering touch of garlic to an undressed or minimally minimally dressed tossed salad. GET THE FAT OUT OF ENTREES • Rethink pizza: With a wonderful red sauce and plenty of veggie toppings, toppings, you can make a dynamite pizza without cheese. Use all sorts of toppings toppings -- spinach, broccoli, artichoke hearts, soaked in sun-dried tomatoes. • Lessen lasagna's fat content by making vegetable lasagna with spinach, zucchini or eggplant, and replace ricotta with nonfat cottage cheese moistened with plain, nonfat yogurt (1 part yogurt to 3 parts cottage cheese). For a richer but cholesterol- free "cheese," use crumbled tofu. GET THE FAT OUT OF DESSERTS • Apples, when they're baking, smell like the richest dessert on earth, but they can easily contain no added fat whatsoever. Peel the top halves of your favorite cooking apples and take out the cores. If you like, you can stuff the cored space with raisins or chopped dates. Pour on honey or New England maple syrup and bake for about an hour, adding more syrup as necessary to keep the apples moist. These are yummy hot or cold, and your house will hold the lovely scent for hours. • Freeze grapes and eat them casually casually out of hand. These are especially delicious in warm weather. If you're in the market to buy, you know that accumulating a down payment requires a great deal of diligence, diligence, patience and planning. If you know you can handle mortgage mortgage payments with ease - but the down payment is the only thing that's holding you back, you may want to take advantage of the recently extended extended "RRSP Home Buyers' Plan. Revamped for first-time buyers only, the federal plan lets individuals withdraw withdraw up to $20,000 of their RRSPs, tax-free to use towards the down payment. payment. Or, it you're in no rush to buy, you may want to take advantage of the Ontario Home Ownership Savings Savings Plan (OHOSP). This provincial plan was also recently extended and revamped, allowing first-time buyers to tuck away savings towards the down payment on a home, while receiving receiving annual tax credits of up to $500 per individual and $1,000 per couple. Details of both of these incentive incentive programs are outlined below. RRSP Home Buyers' Plan The new, modified RRSP Home Buyers' Plan allow you to withdraw up to $20,000 from your RRSPs ($40,000 per couple) to purchase or build a home. No income tax is deducted deducted from these funds, as long as they're repaid to an RRSP according to the government's repayment schedule. The program has helped thousands thousands of Canadians attain the dream of home ownership - many who would not have been able to make a purchase without it. You can take advantage of the plan if neither you nor your spouse have owned a home and lived in it as your principal place or residence in any of the five calendar years before the time of withdrawal. However, keep in mind that you can only participate participate in the plan once. Once you enter into an agreement to buy or build a qualifying home, you may withdraw funds from your RRSP, but you must acquire the home before October of the year following following the year in which you made the withdrawal. For example, if you withdrew funds in 1994, you would have to complete your purchase before before October 1995. How it Works Once you enter an agreement to buy or build a home, you'll have to complete a special form (T1036) which is available at Revenue Canada Canada district offices. This form should- then be submitted to the financial institution institution which holds your RRSP. Keep in mind that you can withdraw withdraw money from your RRSP tax- free if the money was deposited at least 90 days prior to withdrawal. The home you buy must be your principal principal place of residence within one year after buying or building it. The home must also be acquired not more than 30 days before receiving receiving the withdrawal under the RRSP Home Buyers' Plan. Repayment Schedule To retain the tax-deferred status, the money you withdraw must be repaid repaid over a period of 15 years. You can opt to pay less than your scheduled scheduled annual payments, but the amount you don't repay must be reported reported as income on your return for that year. The repayments have to be made before December 31 of each year - but the repayment period begins the second year following the year in which the withdrawal was made, So, if you took funds out to purchase a home in 1994, you would have to make your first payment by the end of 1996. (The repayments don't have to be made to the same RRSP you withdrew funds from). Also keep in mind that you don't get a second tax break when you make an annual payment, so you'll have to inform your RRSP issuer that your repayment isn't a regular RRSP contribution. RRSP repayment forms are available from any Revenue Canada Canada district office. OHOSP The Ontario Home Ownership Savings Plan is another valuable tool in saving for a down payment. Since the plan was first introduced six years ago, some 350,000 plans have been opened and more than 200,000 people have used it to buy homes. It was recently extended by the provincial government to run indefinitely. indefinitely. However, it was revamped so that only tax credits are allowed; there are no longer any exemptions to the Land Transfer Tax - unless you opened a plan by December 31, 1993. Eligibility in OHOSP is determined determined by family income. You can participate as an individual it your annual net income is less than $40,000 - or if you and your spouse have a combined net income of less than $80,000. Although there's no limit to the amount you can contribute, your tax credit entitlement is based on contributions contributions of not more than $2,000 per person or $4,000 per couple, per year. To invest in an OHOSP, simply complete an OHOSP application form at any participating financial institution institution and deposit funds into the plan. You can only open one OHOSP.
