Don't Mess with Mother Goose A mother goose has been causing quite a flap at the Bowmanville Marina, charging and hissing at hapless boaters who stumble across her nest The protective mother laid her eggs about a week ago in this carpeted boat-bumper located smack-dab in the middle of a boat walk. Sailors boarding or disembarking near the waterfront nesting grounds this spring should be doubly careful to watch where they step. From Page One can be waterproof. "Today, felt is used to make coats, vests, slippers, boots, mittens and hats. It's good for all outer garments." garments." Felt is delicate enough to make fine fabric jewellery and tough enough to make solid tennis balls. Sztraka's felt is nothing like the limp, industrially-made sheets sold in craft stores today. Her felt is closer to what nomadic nomadic farmers used ages ago and, in many cases, still do. It's dense and sturdy and warm. She enhances the natural tone of the wool by applying colored patterns. Felt can be made either flat or "formed." Patterns can be cut out of the flat yardage and sewn, or three- dimensional items can be formed without seams. Making wool into felt is a miraculous miraculous process, Sztraka says. "We use soap and water and just caress the wool. The alkali opens up the structure of the hair pieces and the agitation shrinks the hair. As it starts to change it's something like a miracle. "In the beginning it's like a really light pastry and then you notice these fluffy strands become a homogeneous homogeneous unit of one material, due to the soapy water and hand work." She raves about the quality of Ontario wool, compared to what was available in Hungary. Initial samples are necessary to determine shrinkage, which can range from 10% to 50% depending on the wool batch. Judit Sztraka traces her own roots back to include several generations generations of blacksmiths, wicker crafters and even an uncle who was a fashion fashion designer. Knitting and embroidery embroidery were an everyday part of her formative formative years. Hungarian art and culture have survived wars and repression, the artist says. "Where I lived, we were surrounded surrounded by the influence of the Roman Roman Empire and 1,000 years of history, history, including 11th century churches. Those were my normal surroundings. "The communist theology only saturated the living artists' lives, but the history remains. Even the many wars haven't wiped out the history." Judit Sztraka is doing her bit to ensure that the art of felt-making does not become forgotten. She offers her introductory felt- making course on June 11th in the afternoon at the Visual Arts Centre. A larger project will be tackled in the second course, July 9 and 10.
