Education The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Wednesday, June 1,1994 5 Ontario Street School Wins Awards at Kiwanis Music Festival Trent University Hosts Waste Management Workshop June 11th A waste management workshop at Trent University June 11 aims to arm municipal politicians and administrators administrators and interested citizens with some basic and up-to-date information to help them make decisions about future future garbage disposal. Jackie Tinson, a Millbrook councillor councillor and Trent employee, helped organize organize the workshop because "I felt I was ill-informed to make decisions and needed to know what current, independent independent research findings were showing. I felt sure that other municipal municipal councillors felt the same way. Councils arc frequently approached by engineering consulting companies with offers to extend the life of local landfill sites and councillors often have no basis on which to evaluate these offers." The workshop will explore alternatives alternatives to landfill such as the three Rs - recycling, reusing and reducing - and composting. Related issues on the agenda are cutting waste disposal costs, protecting the environment and preserving quality of life. Speakers are scheduled in the morning and problem-solving group sessions, in the afternoon. Keynote speaker Barbara Wallace, an environmental studies professor at Trent, will talk about Resources Not Garbage: Maximizing Diversion from Disposal. Wallace is executive director of the Citizens' Clearinghouse on Waste Management, a non-profit informa- tion/cducation service, and president of Wallace Associates. Since 1977, she has been working with community community groups and local municipalities on issues such as solid and hazardous waste, water pollution, toxic substances substances and public consultation.
