i 4 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Wednesday, June 8,1994 Knox Students Enjoy Adventure in Ottawa By Brian Zegers Grade Eight Trip to Ottawa! Wednesday, May 11, was the day set for the grade eights to leave for Ottawa, When we arrived at school we first had to go through half a day of school. Just before noon, Mr. Hcl- mus gave us our room assignments and van assignments. Finally, the clock struck 1:00. We packed the vans with our luggage and piled in. Half way through the drive we stopped in Kingston at McDonald's McDonald's for a quick snack. Then we continued on our way to Ottawa. At six o'clock the vans reached the Nov- otel where we would be staying for the next few days. We then checked in, received the keys to our rooms and settled in to our second story rooms. Soon after we arrived we left again for the Rideau Centre to cat supper and do a bit of shopping. When we were all back in the Novotel we went for a swim in the fifth floor pool. It was great. We enjoyed enjoyed the sauna, a steam room, a hot tub and the huge pool! There was even a weight room. The sound and lights show at Parliament Hill that we were supposed to go to was cancelled because of the pouring rain so this gave us even more time in the pool. When we got tired of swimming, we went back to our rooms and watched T.V. At 11:00 we had devotions and then it was time to go to bed. On Thursday morning we woke Cream Pie Auction Benefits United Way up bright and early and left at 7:45 to go to the Rideau Centre for breakfast. Most of us ate at NATES because it was only $1.75 for fries, toast, two eggs, bacon, two sausages and tea! Following breakfast we walked to -Parliament Hill for a tour of the' buildings. We were able to sec the Senate, the House of Commons, the Library of Parliament (which survived survived the 1916's fire), and the Confederation Confederation Hall. The gothic style and the limestone walls and marble floors made the Parliament buildings look very impressive. Following that we went up to the Peace Tower and got a great view of Ottawa and Hull while die clocks ticked above us. The next stop, also in the Peace Tower, was the Memorial Chamber. There was the Book of Remembrance and in it were hand painted all the names of those who died in World War I. Now, it was time to walk to the War Memorial where the grade eights got their picture taken. After that short stop, we continued on to the National Art Gallciy to have a guided tour. We were shown the Voice of Fire and many other popular paintings. Next was an appointment at the Eternal Flame where we would get our official picture taken and then we headed on to Question Period. Wow, quite some debates and yelling went on there! It was great to see people like Lucien Bouchard and Paul Martin Martin who were engaged in a big argument. argument. After about 40 minutes of listening listening to Question Period, we hopped into the vans and drove to the Aviation Aviation Museum. On the way to this museum museum we passed the Prime Minister's home. It was enormous! Back in the Aviation Museum a World War II veteran gave us a tour and told us many fascinating stories about the .old airplanes, especially the ones used in the war. Now we boarded the vans again for a short drive to the Museum of Science and Technology. There were lots of hands on things there to enjoy and many great facts to lcam and gadgets to see. We were also able to climb and walk through big steam locomotives. locomotives. Next on the agenda was supper which we ate at a nearby McDonald's. McDonald's. Finally, when we were all full, we drove to the long awaited "Wave Pool." It was awesome! Huge waves would come at you and flip you right over! The big water slide was another great thing. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed enjoyed the pool. At 9:00 the pool Whap! Forty-four dollars bought Damiem Bartlett and Darcie closed down so we went back to the Knapp the delightful privilege of giving Bowmanville High School Novotel. We were walking above them and could see them through the upstairs glass. After our tour was completed wc saw the coin shop where I bought a souvenir coin of the Mint in Ottawa and in Winnipeg. Following this great tour was the War Museum. It was a long walk all the way across the street! This museum museum had three floors. The first floor was based on World War II and up on the third floor was a special exhibit exhibit on the Korean War. Everyone was hungry now but there was yet one more place to visit' before lunch. We got to Rideau Hall, Governor General Ramon John Hnat- yshyn's Home expecting a tour of the grounds but instead, we toured inside the public rooms like the Tent room and the Ballroom. It was interesting. At last! Lunch at the Rideau Centre. Centre. Wc all stuffed ourselves and headed on to the Museum of Civilization Civilization in Hull Quebec. We saw the movie. movie. "Blue Planet" at the Cineplus Imax Theatre. We went speeding through the mountains and flew over the glaciers! Then we toured the Grand Hall and the History Hall which were interesting. Now, on to the last place: The Experimental Experimental Farm. Here, we saw a sow giving birth to her piglets! We also saw cows, horses and sheep in the bams and a display of old tractors. Finally, we got into the vans and headed out of Ottawa but the vans were low on gas and so we stopped to fill up and get an ice-cream cone. On we drove for an hour and then stopped to have a meal at the Brock- ville Pizza Hut. Here we totally pigged out! A few hours later we reached Knox and our parents picked us up. The trip was very interesting and it was a great experience to leant more about our capital city Ottawa!
