Richards A local student attending York University wants to set up her own business. However, Sharon Broersma has come up against municipal officials who don't know quite what to do with her idea. Broersma, in her presentation to the General Purpose and Administration Administration Committee on Monday morning, June 6, stated she wants to paint house numbers on curbs. She would charge home-owners a fee for this service. "This is a unified numbering system system and new in Clarington," Broersma Broersma said. The idea is to paint white numbers numbers on a blue background on the curbs outside of people's homes for nine dollars per house. If feasible, she would look at doing doing reflective signs at the end of driveways in rural areas. Broersma, accompanied by her brother, Don, said this type of numbering numbering has been done in a number of municipalities in Ontario including Peterborough. The project, as proposed by Sharon Sharon Broersma, would supply her with a job for the summer. "If it gets to be too much, then I would hire another student," she told the committee members. At this time she is hoping to begin begin work at subdivisions in Courtice and in the Waverley Road area. Economic Development Officer Todd Letts joined the two at the podium podium to answer questions. He told the committee Broersma had been to see the One-Stop Shopping Shopping Committee. This committee is established to help potential business business persons in the municipality resolve resolve their problems with a minimum minimum number of meetings and a minimum of red tape. There has also been a meeting with the Director of Public Works and the Fire Chief in the middle of May. During discussion, councillors decided to have the Chief Administrative Administrative Officer Bill Stockwell look into the matter. Councillor John O'Toole wants to make sure that if the business goes ahead, the numbering doesn't look "disjointed" as it does in Peterborough. Peterborough. If that is the case, the numbers numbers could look "shoddy," he said. À report on the matter will be looked at during the Monday, June. 13, council meeting. < Students opposed to a local cement manufacturer's plans to quarry the West Side Creek Marsh in Bowmanville showed up at the mayor's office on Tuesday morning with a petition demanding stronger municipal action to stop the industrial development.
